Amilo Li1818, does it really only support 2GB of ram?

Postby multimega » Wed Sep 23, 2009 12:18 pm

Hi!.

I have 2 laptops here, and i had 1.5GB (512MB+1024MB) in my Amilo, and 512MB (1*512MB) in the other laptop.

Then i found a 2GB so-dimm on auction cheap, and i bought thinking it would be nice with 2.5GB in my Amilo instead, and put the 1GB which would be
left in the other laptop to make it 1.5GB.

Then i read that Amilo 1818 only supported 2GB maximum, and had to be 2*1GB SO-Dimm on various pages. That was terrible i thought..
but i made some more research and found that the chipset in the amilo 1818 was Intel 945GM which actually supports 4GB so i thought i had a little chance.

When i today got the memory in the mail I tried it in the other older laptop, and it wouldnt boot at all with just the 2GB in it.
I then tried to put the 512MB module in aswell, and voila it booted up. Only showing 2GB of ram instead of 2.5GB. (the chipset from Ati / AMD only supports
2GB maximum instead of the Intel 945GM's 4GB)
Then i thought it was a slim chance of this actually working for me in the Amilo, so off to the Amilo.

Inserted the memory and booted up. 2.5GB of ram showed up for me!. Then Windows Vista booted up and it shows 2.5GB of ram, and is stable for me.

Have anyone else done this and succed?. I will do some more memorytesting to see that all works okey, but it seems like its not that big problem to have this working :)

Sorry for not being a question, but rather some info.

I'm not quite sure what this is about.
Notebooks with the Intel 945GM work fine even with 3GB, depending on the BIOS even 4GB work fine.
For the other notebook we need further details, either the model name of the notebook or the exact chipset name. But for some older notebooks it is known that they don't support 2GB modules, need both slots to be occupied or have compatibility issues with certain RAM modules.

well, as i wrote, Fujitsu-Siemens says it supports maximum of 2GB ram using 2*1GB SoDimm.

And also sites with memorygiudes for the Amilo lists also 2GB as maximum.

I only wanted to tell that the Amilo Li 1818 supports more then it says in the specs. :)

The other computer is a Packard Bell Easynote MZ35 with a celeron 1.46GHz cpu, and Ati IXP450 + Radeon 200m chipset, but it only supports a maximum of 2GB for real.

Most of the FSC data sheets are wrong in terms of RAM and unfortunately most stores only copy that information without checking it. The better source for this information is to find out the chipset and look it up at the Intel website if it's an Intel chipset. Then you know at least what the chipset supports. But what the BIOS supports remains a gamble if you can't find someone who tested the same notebook.
I hardly remember an Amilo of the last 3 years that had a correct data sheet.

This seems to be some exotic combination but the 2GB-limit is correct:
