Xi3670 BIOS advanced access / virtualization support?

Postby phands » Sat Sep 26, 2009 10:04 pm

Hi all,

I'm trying to get Virtualbox running on my Amilo Xi3670, specifically with a 64 bit guest OS (32 bit guest work just fine).

Virtualbox says it's a supported OS, but that hardware virtualization has to be turned on in the BIOS. However, the BIOS as offered by default doesn't include that option - the choices are very few in the boot-time F2 invoked menu. Is there a way to get deeper into the BIOS via another method?

Thanks,

Paul

There is nothing you can cange in the BIOS. I'm not sure about the newer Amilos but at least the older ones like mine can run 64bit guests. But I never tried this on a 32bit host.

Is the vt checkbox activated in the settings of the virtual machine? You'll need that to be checked to run 64bit guests on a 32bit host.
In some special cases it also helps to deactivate ACPI support for the VM.
Which version of VBox are you running?

Hi,

Sorry about taking so long to reply.

I'm on a 64 bit host. SuSE Linux 11.1.... Linux .6.27.29-0.1-default #1 SMP 2009-08-15 17:53:59 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64

I'm running the latest VirtualBox - 3.0.6. The virtualization support options are not enabled in the machine setup. They're present, buy greyed out. Manuals advise that it has to be turned on in the BIOS first. However, there appears to be no way to do that.

ACPI support is on.

I can only run 32 bit guests.

You say you can run 64 bit guests??

Thanks,

P.

Yes I can run the 64bit versions of most operating systems. I had no luck with some of the BSDs and I never tried a 64bit Windows since I have none. But all Linux distributions I tried in 64bit work fine and OpenSolaris distributions also work in 64bit mode.

Which 64bit-OS are you trying to run? At the moment I can't check this but next week I could try and see if I have more luck.

btw: I'm still running VBox 2.2 since 3.x was very buggy at the beginning and I didn't switch so far.

Hi again,

I'm trying to run KUbuntu 9.1 beta 64 bit in a 64 bit Linux for test purposes.

As soon as I try to boot from the 64 bit iso image, I get a warning that only an i686 CPU is detected, and that I can't use a 64 bit guest.

The Acceleration options are not selectable in the VM settings - they are greyed out.

So, I'm running a 64 bit linux host and trying to run a 64 bit linux guest, but can't turn on the necessary settings because the BIOS access is so limited.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Paul

Still no luck. I've upgraded to VBox 3.0.10 and still cannot run 64 bit guests. The acceleration box is greyed out in the virtual machine settings dialog, although it is set. It cannot be unset.

All guest install attempts fail with "this is a 32 bit machine - you cannot install 64 bit software on it. Latest attempts are win 7 and various Linux distros. I still suspect a BIOS issue, but there are no relevant, visible BIOS choices at boot time.

Does anyone know if there's a better/alternative BIOS?

A 64-bit guest o/s inside a 32-bit host will probably never work without hardware-assisted virtualization, for example VMWare has the same "problem". Check your Xi3670 processor: if it is the T6500, it does not seem to support IVT at the processor level, so no option in the BIOS:
