Operating System

Postby electrovalent » Thu Oct 08, 2009 7:07 pm

Hi, I have a laptop : Amilo L1310G, and Im looking for a non windows operating system with no critical issues such as, fan control, graphic problems etc..
I just want to make the main parts of the system work properly without compiling ( I'm not a programmer).
Thank you.

All current Linux distributions should work fine out of the box (more or less). Maybe you'll need to install an extra driver for 3D graphics or WLAN. I read about some problems concerning the installation of Ubuntu 9.04 due to some problem with the detection of the DVD drive. But I'm not sure if this was a problem of Ubuntu or of the user.

I think Opensolaris and PC-BSD would be too heavy for this machine and DesktopBSD might have some difficulties to detect your audio hardware. TrueBSD might work, but I guess you'll have problems with the WLAN and no 3D acceleration. Maybe Belenix works, but you'll surely have the same issues like with TrueBSD. Haiku is still in alpha phase and most likely lacks most of the drivers you'll need. For all the rest I have no experience or I think that it would be too much work for you to get it running.

Do you have experience with any OS? I'd suggest to try that one first.

(K)Ubuntu, fedora, arch, debian(latest releases) had the same problem because of the same configuration on kernel about the acpi. The result was no cpu fan working at kernel load.Happens for many years and no developer is able to fix this in any of the linux distros.Except if you know 1 without this major issue.I am with pcbsd now and the fan works just fine but i have several problems with graphics, speed, boot errors.I will still try other Osystems but i have start feeling disappointed.Cant get my laptop to work for almost 2 months now.Maybe i 'll try belenix or haiku. Thanks for your suggestions.

You might also want to try Gentoo or Debian with the BSD kernel. This should give you the ACPI abilities of BSD and most of the userland features Linux provides.
Debian/kFreeBSD is still testing but seems to be pretty mature because in the next release it's supposed to be in the stable branch. I can't tell anything about the Gentoo version.

Did you try this?:

It should make thee fan run permanently.

At ubuntuusers.de the user yimyam wrote a script to switch the fan on and off depending on the CPU temperature:

Maybe this can be an inspiration.

Hi, i also have L1310g, and this --> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTe ... miloL1310G don't work on 9.04 ubuntu, i have tried a lot. Fan still stops in couple minutes after startup of ubuntu. Damn fan... But i have tried to install Windows 7 a month ago and it worked just fine. Win 7 found and downloaded all the drivers. Of course with my 1,7Ghz and 1Gb ram it worked slower than XP, but made a lot of joy :D
