Li1718 maximum memory confusion

Postby Fat_Bob7 » Sat Oct 10, 2009 9:02 pm

Hi

I am wanting to upgrade the 1GB RAM in my Li1718, but when I run either memory scanners or utilities like CPUZ, they identify the motherboard as an Amilo A1650 having a maximum RAM of 1GB. If I manually select an Li1718 on any memory site it claims a maximum of 2GB. The label stuck underneath states "Amilo Li 1718 Model MS2212". I have looked through similar posts on this forum, which give me some hope, but I am still confused.

Can anybody please advise

That's weird, I'd have a look at the components shown in the device manager, especially the CPU and the chipset:
Li 1718: Intel Celeron M / Pentium Dual Core / Core Duo, ATI RC415ME + SB460 (http://docs.ts.fujitsu.com/dl.aspx?id=d ... 116cee94c9)
A1650: AMD Athlon 64 / Turion 64 / Mobile Sempron, ATI RS480 + SB400 (http://ts.fujitsu.com/Resources/13/225690970.pdf)

It's also possible that the BIOS shows some information like serial number and model name/number.

Yes, 2 GB should work.

Thanks Aaron for your help.

My CPU is indeed Intel, but I think by Bios may be the problem. It states:

CPU Type: Genuine Intel CPU T2080 @ 1.73GHz
System Bios Version: V1.7
VGA Bios Version: BK-ATI VER008.050I.027.001
KBC Version: 08.A3
Serial Number: 914B901130G7350A35FKS0B
Product Name: AMILO A1650
Manufacturer Name: Fujitsu Siemens
UUID Number: e0b0b2e0-5705-11dc-8798-a98a66e248df

Should I upgrade my Bios, so that everything agrees, before upgrading my memory to 2GB? Would this Bios allow such an upgrade as it is?

With regards and thanks

If find it hard to believe that a BIOS for the A1650 works on the Li 1718 - but it's not a mainboard of the A1650, that's for sure.
I think it is a risk to upgrade the BIOS.
Was the laptop repaired by someone? Are you the first owner?

(If 2 GB RAM is the only problem, then I'd probably try whether 2 GB RAM work - without changing anything else...)

Thank-you again for your advice.

I bought the laptop direct from a computer store and definitely thought that I was the first owner. I has not been repaired since. I will follow your advice and try the 2GB upgrade (probably Kingston as advised in other posts).

With regards and thanks
