1667g ati vga x700 problem

Postby Borislav » Fri Oct 23, 2009 10:00 am

Hi all.

I have decided to post to Hardware section (not Software) since there was no problem before. Few days ago while playing screen went black. After a restart, it worked fine, but afterwards it happened again, not in gaming. Day after I even couldn't enter windows xp with Ati drivers running. It works ok with drivers uninstalled or in the safe mode.
YEAH, you wold say Ati drivers (ones with the notebook), but they worked before, got even the latest from Fujitsu, reinstalled windows (original with the notebook), flashed the BIOS and VBIOS, and still the same - as soon as windows opens the desktop (native 1280x800) in few seconds screen blacks out with something running in background - only button power-off works. I repeat, everything was fine for almost 3 years with the same software.

Yesterday, I have managed somehow to quickly jump to section of VGA properties - settings/advanced/troubleshoot and turn off (reduce to the max) the hardware acceleration and it helped, at least for next 10 minutes when I turned it off regularly - it was a respectable result! While installing drivers this time I didn't install "Ati catalyst center" just to narrow the options. Now, I will try to "accelerate it back" step by step and see what happens. Catalyst? Way later.

I suspect - if there is such a possibility - that "section" of vga card makes the problem when drivers initiate it.

At first, I was suspecting the ACPI - power management was not functional, no hibernation and standby. But since it requires all devices to have ACPI support which means right drivers - x700 was disabling power management because basic XP VGA drivers do not support advanced power management. Now, with Ati "drivers back" power management functions are on.

So, is it possible that a "part" (section-function) of the VGA died? Any ideas?

Yes, sounds like some part of the graphics card died.

The A1667G has a X700 MXM card. Are you sure that you've got a X300 currently?
At least a MXM card can be replaced if you find another one.

Hello, i say sorry ahead to my writing languge because im from estonia :)

i also have had fsc A1667G laptop for about 4 years. everything worked fine until now for 2 months. the problem is the same discribed up there. but my laptop video card is x700.
is there any chance of fixing it or replacing it, because it starts to annoy very much. altought the laptop is in very good shape, most of the time it has only stood on the table as desktop computer.

A slim one, see e. g.
http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards ... n-fix.html
http://blogs.howstuffworks.com/2009/06/ ... ard-maybe/
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=385857
(No joke, it worked for some NVidia cards in the German forum... ;-))

tossutaja wrote:or replacing it

The problem is to find another card, that fits (and works) and doesn't require another cooling solution.

OK, fixed title.
Now, the Thing.
I was happy about almost resolving the problem with the display settings/advanced/troubleshoot/acceleration slider. Almost. Settings for the left side position with almost everything turned off is OK. And next few also, but at 4th, with 3D, DirectDraw and cursor acceleration turned on the problem is back.
I am not much of a gamer, sometimes I do like to kill some dwarfs and dragons  (heil HOMM) but working in DTP does make a difference. With VGA acceleration off you should try to draw something complex in vector based software.... So, the problem should not be ignored.
Fixing it with wires like in 19th century radio is no-go, but replacing the card should be considered. If anyone knows how much (new) VGA costs, if there is any, please let me know.

Regards, Borislav.

No, X700 is "external" - inside, but as module in MXM connector.

BTW: I've got that FSC A1667G too, ATI X700 too, problems too... :? I'm planing to try something (clean, re-paste, oven) or byu new GPU (on eBay for 130$).

I was lucky :D Oven was not necessary. I have cleaned the fan, re-fited and re-pasted cooler and cut-through all the holes in case below the fan (2/3 was covered, don't know why). Now its working again 8)
GL everyone with yours FSC,
