Amilo m3438g max hdd and what sata it support

Postby warblade » Tue Oct 27, 2009 8:10 pm

Hi everyone.

I just encounter a problem with my hard drive which in my opinion is either nasty virus, malware or any other crap or just the life time of my old 80GB Fujitsu hdd is over. So for now i was forced to install new OS on my second one and now waiting for an external cover to test the disk but I'm also thinking about buying a new bigger hard drive as a replacement and i have seen that somebody was lucky enought to put 250GB and it's working surprisingly ... So does anybody know what is the biggest HDD you can actually put into the 3438 :?: and another question even more important is what Sata drives it supports :?: Sata 150 or 300 :?: My bios is 1.10c the last official one and so far no problems.

Thx for any words of advice

SATA 2 is downward-compatible, but maybe the hdd has a jumper to manually set SATA 1 mode.
You have to make sure you buy an hdd with 9,5mm height (12,5mm doesn't fit).

All capacities up to 2TB (when available in some years ;-) ) should work.

Hello
I have a WD3200BEKT SATA II hard drive and it is not recognized by my notebook (Amilo 3438) I mean the drive works (it spinns and heats), but it is not shown in bios...
How can i downward it? It has 4 pins and is it possible to use a jumper to make it work as SATA I even though it is claimed to be only SATA II? Or maybe any boot cd to downward SATA mode in bios?

As you can see in this picture, the pins are only for RPS and SSC:

There is no way to jumper the drive to SATA1. I would suggest to try a Samsung drive. Several of our M-series users reported them to work well.

Ok, but... here and here 2 people managed to make their WD scorpio black 320GB work fine without any problems and if i'm not mistaken Alienware M5790/M5750 motherboard is fully the same as the Amilo Xi1526/Xi1546/Xi1554 one. So may it be that a motherboard from any of these 3 Amilos can solve my problem?

I don't know if the notebooks are the same but it seems like they are. Alienware and FSC used a different BIOS. We have some users who reported, that they could solve a problem of their Amilo by flashing it with an Alienware BIOS. Maybe this solves your problem too.

Disclaimer:
Flashing an incompatible BIOS might make your Notebook unusable. You have been warned.

Hi

I had a nightmare also... bought 3 hard drives to no avail... well, not being seen in BIOS. Have no idea where can locate a SATA hard drive in BIOS, ide configuration just shows cd/dvdrom.

My solution is here that may help...

Hi

Is there an official statement from FSC that WD black caviar kind of drives are NOT supported by the AMILO M3428G series, because that's a fact I'm afraid.
I managed to use a 80 gb blue caviar version but now that I bought two 320 GB black caviar for nothing I'm hesitating to invest any more money here
And since both original Samsung drives died, they don't look really reliable to me though I'm very reluctant to buy Samsung drives again
