PI1536 - upgraded RAM, now it won't boot

Postby brucec » Wed Dec 02, 2009 7:35 pm

Hi all,
I know there are plenty of stories similar to mine on these boards, but I'm struggling for ideas how to solve this.
Basically I exchanged the 2x512Mb RAM chips for 2x1Gb Crucial chips. Now the system refuses to start. When I press the power button the screen lights up but remains blank, the LEDs flash on, there appears to be hard disk activity, but nothing appears on the screen at all.

I've tried the hardware reset, removing the CMOS battery, even put a brand new CMOS battery in, but still nothing. Put the old RAM chips back in but it makes no difference.

The laptop is over two years old, so is out of warranty.

I really need to get this going as it's not even my laptop but a friend's and she's going travelling in a couple of weeks and needs her computer. I've upgraded the RAM in literally hundreds of computers and never had a problem like this before with any of them.

So, any ideas for my next course of action would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

have you tried removing the new ram, installing the old ram, and looking for more uptodate version of the machine bios

Thanks for the thought.
I solved this in the end by replacing the graphics card. It was damaged during the upgrade. New card - expensive at 100 Euro - and problem solved.

Cheers all,
Bruce
