Problems after reinstalling XP - Help!!!!

Postby DevonRaiderUK » Sun Dec 06, 2009 10:52 am

Hi there I apologise if this has been covered before but I've searched for hours for what I'm looking for on the web and I'm now banging my head on a wall! If any of you computer genius's out there can shed any light on what I'm doing wrong (It's probably something obvious) I would be eternally grateful! Here's what I've got and what I've done so far:

Computer: Amilo pi1505 T2050 1.6Ghz
O/S: XP Media Centre edition version 2002 Service Pack 2

After continuous problems I took the brave (and stupid) step of reinstalling XP completely and erasing everything. I did a bit of research on the internet and followed the youtube guide which went exactly as shown using my recovery disk! Upon starting up I had only 1 item on my desktop labelled recovery-Info. I then used my second disk (DVD42 Drivers and Utilities) to load the drivers etc which I think has worked because it's given me the following message when I go to the Express (DeskUpdate) part of the disk: 'All components have the latest driver version on this CD/DVD'. I've downloaded the same drivers for XP off the fujitsu website and it told me exactly the same thing. However the computer looks nothing like it did before as the image is all blurred and there are other problems too. I've checked to see what graphics card I've got as I thought I may have to download these manually and I've used the DirectX Diagnostic tool (found that on the internet) but under Display tab Device field there is nothing there! The Notes section states: 'The system is using the generic video driver. Please install video driver provided by Hardware manufacturer.' I think that the graphics card is an Intel GMA 950 but do I have to individually find and install drivers for everything e.g. sound, video, Wireless adaptors (the wireless settings are different also, but I have connected to the internet using ethernet) ???? I was hoping that the Drivers and Utilities disk would have this on but to an untrained eye it doesn't appear so. I think I saw the chipset settings being downloaded on the drivers disk but that's about all. I've also noted that the keyboard isn't configured correctly as the " and @ keys are switched round.

I know that there seems to be a lot to deal with but I get the feeling that there is something I've missed. If I could just get the display back to the sharp image it was before it would be a start. Please be as basic as you can with your advices as I'm not good at this stuff at all and it's taken me hours to get to this pitiful position!

Many thanks for anybody who has taken the time to read this.

You're right, the Drivers and Utilities DVD should install all necessary drivers - including the graphics driver...

This is the graphics driver provided by Fujitsu:
http://support.ts.fujitsu.com/Download/ ... 20graphics
Just download and extract it, then execute Setup.exe. After rebooting the laptop should use the correct display resolution automatically.

Then you should have a look at the device manager to see whether there are other drivers missing.

Thanks for an amazingly quick reply Aaron.

I did what you said and Bingo! you were spot on, the display looks as glorious as it was before. As far as looking at the device manager goes to see what is missing it could be written in fluent Chinese! However I think you now have me looking in the right direction. I've typed in my computer serial number into the fujitsu support helpline and it's given me a long list of drivers. These include loads to do with BIOS, Audio, WLAN, LAN, SATA (This one scares me but I'm not sure why!) and the Graphics one you said. Is it safe to download these and will this solve all my problems (excluding girlfriend, kids, money etc) ?????

Speak to me O guru of computer greatness!

Cheers, Glenn.

I think it should be safe to install all drivers provided by Fujitsu. (You don't need the BIOS update.)

Thanks again Aaron. I've now got the sound, graphics etc sorted and have moved on to download XP Service Pack 3. The amount of BIOS flash driver updates listed on the fujitsu site were concerning me but on your advice I will leave well alone.

Overall the computer is working faster than ever. A cold beer awaits you in Devon should you ever visit these parts!

Cheers, Glenn.
