PI3540 - Windows XP installation

Postby pingwin » Thu Dec 10, 2009 12:03 pm

Hi all,
although I'm using Linux for daily tasks, I would like to install Win XP for gaming :-)
I have M$ Vista preinstalled like any other of you, but it is awful hog. I can't really use that...
I have added intel sata ahci driver to my installation cd (Windows XP SP3) via nlite.

The problem is:
While I boot from CD after "To continue press any button" I get always black screen and no reaction, cpu fun on 100%. The only I can is ctrl+alt+delete :-(

I tried W2K SP4 - It boots successfully but it can't recognize drive (since I didn't find intel sata drivers for that OS)

Could anybody help with that issue?

Are there any Linux (or non-Windows) partitions?
I had a similar problem, with a new (empty) partition table the setup started.

Hi!
Yes, I have several linux partitions (LVM). But I don't think this could make some trouble to instalation.
Win installer should see those partitions as "unknown".

But anyway I can boot instalation cd without hdd to test it.
Thanks for tip!

Yes, it *should* ;-)
I thought so, too, but in my case this was really the problem.

I don't know, I've never searched for a workaround... (I had no data on the other partitions, so I just deleted them.)

Solved! :-)
Root cause: WinXP Installation CD had a problem with type of extended partition. This is not a problem for any other modern OS but you know...
Since I had 'Win95 extended' , installer was probably looking for windows logical partitions on that ext. part. but he didn't find any.
So it stucked.
I changed the type to '85 - linux extended' and installer went successfully now, the partition was labeled as 'unknown'...

Now it looks this way and everything is fine:
Code: Select all
Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1               1         262     2104483+  82  Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2   *         263        8980    70027335    7  HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3            8981       38913   240433105+  85  Linux extended
/dev/sda5            8981        8996      116741+  83  Linux
/dev/sda6            8996        9010      120456   83  Linux
/dev/sda7            9011        9025      120456   83  Linux
/dev/sda8            9026       38913   240075328+  8e  Linux LVM

if you have linux (that you using now for daily activities)...and try to install the xp like home/professional/ or service pack edition than it's not work as per my experience, just because of linux have high priority than the windows platform...so for the solution you have to create the both type of partition first of all Dos and Non-dos both....and first install the XP and than go for the linux than it will work...!
