Amilo LI 1818 laptop turns off automically for no reason

Postby mamun92 » Fri Jan 01, 2010 5:15 pm

I have an Amilo Li 1818 laptop and have had it for around 2 years. However, recently, the laptop turns off on its own for no reason, without any warning. Once it turns off, it won't turn back on again at times... does turn on after a while though.

Usually i'll be able to use it for around an hour before it just turns off. I've reinstalled the OS and even then, that was a struggle as it kept turning off during installation. I'm wondering if it could be that the fan isn't working and the laptop overheats, because I once tried using a Linux CD and i remember it not starting up because it said something about 'overheating'. Is there a way I can check this?

Also, when I finally installed the OS, I had to life the laptop up to allow air to go the bottom of the laptop so it didn't get too hot...and even had an external fan near it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, it's overheating.
Do you hear the fan?
You should clean the fan, remove dust etc., maybe even replace the head-conductive paste on the processor.

Thanks for your reply. Is there a way I can check to make sure it is overheating. I do hear the fan, it is quite loud at times. I've opened it and there doesn't seem to be much dust in there.

You could install a tool like Everest to watch your temperatures.

Once I have installed it, how would I know whether it is overheating or not...? Is there a maximum temperature that I should be aware of?

Thanks

Same problem with my Li 2727 laptop. This puppy came with forced vista, so I swapped it to XP. Dualbooting from Ubuntu Lucid to this when needed.
Applies to windows, probably to linux as well. (seems to appear more freq. in XP)
Everything seems to work well, but there are some random flickering problems with screen and this annoying shutdown thing.

I give my votes to overheating as my (1.7Ghz dual core celeron) CPU gets to ~ 90'C and after about 92'C windows shuts down without warnings or normal shutdown seq. I ignore the blame on those internal fans, fans usually work, unless they make no sound at all, and vacuuming air holes didn't have longtime effect on temp. (prob. werent too dirty after all.)

My FIX was that I have a fan to cool computer frame, almost instantly dropped ~ 20'C down, (12 cm Fan does the job)
internal fans are prob. too small or there something wrong with manufacturing, as computers should not get this hot without some kind of a protection.

With external fan cooling the back and under my system temperature remains about 50 'C, without is raises about 10'C. While writing this it stays under 62'C, CPUs idling and internal fans quiet/stopped. (fans kick in after 63-65'C)

I think that 80 - 85'C starts to be too much, more than that and longterm risk of component failure comes too high.
I used alfredos speedfan to get those readings.
