Volume control with Fn keys: Amilo Pro V3205

Postby kmbasu » Wed Oct 18, 2006 10:52 am

Hi, I have made a new installation (with updates) of SUSE 10.1 in my Amilo Pro V3205, which mostly works fine. One annoying problem is that I cannot control the VOLUME UP, VOLUME DOWN and MUTE with the function keys. The function keys for screen brightness works all right.

I'll be thankful for any help!

Probably you have to assign the keycodes to an event (XF86AudioMute, XF86AudioLowerVolume, XF86AudioRaiseVolume). You can do that with xmodmap (or in YaST?).

Thank you very much for your quick response! Following this advice, and also one that I found in the web:
http://dev-loki.blogspot.com/2006/04/ma ... odmap.html
I assigned keycodes for the Fn-keys in an .Xmodmap file, and then used KHotKeys to activate them.

The problem is, it still has no effect on the volume output, although there appears on the screen a small pop-up window when I use the Fn-F6 -- Fn-F8 keys, showing the action I'm taking. The KMix applet also changes its ststus, only the volume output is not affected!

Can you suggest what I've missed, or done wrong? I can provide more details if needed. Thanks again for your attention.

Try to adjust the volume with KMix - does any other channel work?

Hi Aaron,

KMix is automatically started when I use the Fn-keys for controling the volume, and it changes its status accordingly (mute or volume up/down). Only it has no effect on the actual sound output. :(

In KDE my audio device is selected as 'Autodetect', I also tried ALSA, but no change. YaST shows that my sound card is detected as '82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller'. How to make it talk it with KMix?

Thank you for your attention.

I meant you should try to change the volume with other channels. Maybe "Master" or "Wave" isn't correctly recognized.
Try also with "alsamixer" (console).

Hi Aaron,

what exactly you meant by 'changing the volume with other channels'? I tried alsamixer in console, it is also changing its value according to my Fn-key action (mute or volume up/down, just like KMix). The actual sound output is, as usual, not changing.

Thanks a lot for your continuous help.

I don't know how it is in OpenSuSe, but in Ubuntu you rigth-click on the volume icon, choose "preferences" and select the channel you want to control with the volume controls.
Right now you are probably controlling the wrong channel, that's why pushing the buttons don't effect the volume output.

Hope this helps.

HI Luca, thanks for helping. However, right-clicking the volme (KMix) icon gives me two channel options: PCM and Capture, none of which works. Also alsamixer showed only PCM channel availble, and it didn't work there either.

I reported this as a bug to opensuse, and they cliam it has been fixed in suse 10.2. So I'm waiting to make an update sometimes. I'll report if I have success there...

Little update just to let you know that on an Amilo SI1520 (which is basically the same laptop as yours) running Ubuntu 7.04 beta, the volume keys work perfectly.

kmbasu: there should be an option to "expand" all the viewable channels. You are definitely controlling the wrong channel: it happened the same thing on my "main" PC (not a laptop) and had to enable all the channels (many were hidden) before finding the right one.
