M3438g Video card/Monitor problems

Postby nicosia » Tue Oct 24, 2006 3:24 am

Hello guys

I need to take your advice on my problem before sending it in for repair.

While I was playing World of Warcraft, suddenly my computer crashed and when i rebooted i got loads of weird characters on the screen, including the bios screen. To see whats going on inside, I let it fully boot, connected with remote desktop connection, uninstalled the video card from device manager, and rebooted again. I still got the weird characters and lines on the screen BUT they disappeared when windows started loading. Everything looked perfect at this point, but since the drivers were not installed the resolution was only 800x600. I installed the drivers back again, rebooted, but charcters were all over windows as well this time.

I just cannot understand why it "works" properly without drivers. If the video card is burnt out or some other part got hurt from heat, it shouldnt work at all.

Is it possible for the videocard to function if it is burnt?

I also made a search on the forums, and a similar problem to mine is desribed over here:
htopic,302,screen+characters.html

My machine is out of warranty, and I would like to take care of this as cheap as possible with the help of you guys.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like a heat prob to me.
Did you smell anything or did your Amilo feel very hot before your Computer crashed?

Nope, no smells, even when I smell the fan outlet nothing. I use a cooling pad and I didnt realize any "heating" out of ordinary.

I think the graphics card is broken - but it could be the motherboard, too. Two very expensive things... :-(

Are you sure - or what did you do to lose warranty? (Maybe you didn't lose it at all...)

Hi,

I had had the same problem several times, but after having it not used for 3-4 hours the Amilo worked again. After 2 months finally my Video card was fucked up. I think you have to change the VGA-board, very expensive =/

Yes. For example, you can burn out the GPU and leave basic VGA functionality. I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro which works fine as a basic VGA card if you disable hardware acceleration, after it overheated when the fan cable became disconnected.
