Volume very low - any solutions after all these years?

Postby gryzor » Mon Apr 12, 2010 5:40 pm

Hello...

I'm quite fed up with my girlfriend's Si1520 veeery very low volume. I've seen a couple of other similar posts, but no solution... Is there maybe a program that boosts the sound? For instance, the DFX plugin series (for Winamp and others) has a great amp option, but obviously this is not system-wide...

Any ideas?
Thanks!

I know this problem too. Under Linux with the ALSA sound driver the volume is also very low. But I found that under OpenSolaris with the OSS driver it is approximately at 200% of what is known from Windows or Linux (ALSA).
But believe me, you don't really want that volume boost because the maximum volume you know is almost the maximum volume where the speakers produce a harmonic sound. Beyond this they start to croak very ugly. Speech is distorted, literally fubar. Therefore I didn't even try OSS under Linux.

Darn... I tried DFX with Winamp last night and indeed you can't go much higher than the default sound without having serious distortion. What were they thinking, putting in such tiny speakers? Those are not speakers, they're open headphones :D

Any hacks out there for replacing those speakers?

No idea. I guess they didn't think about it at all. It's the same rubbish like with this "stereo microphone", which is in fact only mono because one channel is amplified while the other one is not. The Si 1520 is a nice subnotebook, but the audio hardware is totally messed up.

None, as far as I know. If you want to replace them on your own, make some photos please!
