Amilo 2512 wont boot - caps / number lights on

Postby fatmore » Wed May 19, 2010 10:30 am

I hope somebody can help with a problem that I am having with my Amilo 2512; it won’t boot up at all, not even into Fujitsu Boot screen allowing access to the bios .

When I switch the machine on the Power light comes on, the Caps Lock and Number Lock lights come on and the HDD light spins for a second or two and then fades. The DVD then clicks as if it is searching for a disc and then…..nothing.

Nothing further from the HDD.
Nothing at all from the screen.
Nothing from the Wireless Network light.
The Caps and Number locks remain locked until the Power button is pressed for 10 seconds or so to switch the machine off.

I have tried switching on with the battery connected and no power cable, with the battery and power cable connected and with no batter and the power cable. I have removed left the battery and left over night but nothing.

I upgraded the memory 18 months ago but have had no problems since then and other than that (and an upgrade to Windows 7 when released) I have made no modifications.

My first assumption would be HDD but surely I would see the Fujitsu screen? I then thought about the screen but surely the laptop would continue to boot?

I guess this leaves the Main board but does anyone else have any suggestions before I throw the machine and replace it with a new one?

Thanks in advance for any help / advice or suggestions.

I have a similar problem on my L6825 and have asked the same question(see the L6825 question below in this forum)

There doesn`t seem to be a lot of technical help on this board for this type of problem ( I was hoping for a computer technician with lots of experience)

I believe that the normal practice of attempting to prove the problem is to disconnect HDD and CD drive and see if it powers up to the first screen .

If YES then your problem is the HDD or CD drive

If NO then try removing the RAM memory and if possible substitute it with a known working stick in all slots

If still failing , try a Default reset (remove power ..battery + mains and press ON button for 30 seconds )

Replace mains and switch ON

If still faulty , remove CMOS battery overnight , then replace.

If still faulty check screen OK by plugging in spare monitor

If still faulty...then it looks like your motherboard

This is the stage that I am at

In fact I went further and swopped the BIOS chip and also the CPU ...but mine is still faulty.

I was hoping for a few clues in faulting a motherboard ...

note; don`t forget to wear an earthing wrist band whilst faulting ...and be careful when switching on the mains power supply.

Please don't feel offended, but we have lots of similar posts and in the end it always turns out to be a defective main board and that there is mostly no reasonable way to solve it. Solving it means to get another board and to replace the old one. This is only meaningful if you still have warranty.
Buying a new board is too expensive to make any sense (you can almost get a new notebook for the same price) and getting a used one is usually hard, because you have to find someone with a defective model of your notebook type but with another defect. But even if a user finds a replacement board, most are not able to replace them on their own. And we can hardly give detailed tips for replacing a board in a notebook we've never seen before in real life.
After answering some dozens of these posts without being able to provide a real solution one gets tired of it.

Fair comment..but as this is the Amilo forum , I was always hoping that the level of expertise and experience was going to be a bit higher than that offered on other universal question type forums such as Yahoo Answers or Fixed4Free etc.

I can understand you getting tired of dealing with the same type of request.

I am moderator on a completely different subject and understand your frustrations , but in my particular subject , it is always more interesting when there is a problem requiring a more in depth type of answer, especially with an enquirer who is keen to explore your own expertise in the subject...and will understand any answers or suggestions given

Understandably , in the trade , modern electronic equipment is no longer faulted down to actual components but usually relies on substitution faulting.(ie ..board or similar swopping)

Commercially and economically viable to just swop a motherboard .... but not so interesting if you prefer discovering the actual failure causing the problem (especially if the faulty equipment is basically "dead" or "failing to boot up " )....and impossible if no spare is either available or affordable.

Thanks for your comments .

Thank you all for the replies. Unfortunately it looks liek the HDD, ggrrrrrrrrr.

We do these things always fail just after the Warranty runs out

Thanks again folks!
