V2020, VGA output, no signal recognized on Flatscreen TV

Postby smee » Sat May 22, 2010 6:10 pm

I have an Amilo V2020, and it is my reliable work horse since 2006! :D
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I recently bought a Sony Bravia KDL-40EX501 flatscreen TV (latest firmware), I wanted to connect my laptop to this TV via the VGA interface, as the TV supports this. This seemed like the best option as TV-Out did not give a very good resolution.

The problem I face is that I cannot get the Sony to recognise the Laptop Signal through the VGA, and I am unsure if the Laptop is recognising the TV signal.
The 15 pin cable is new, could it be that because my Laptop is from 2006, it does not support displaying on this LCD flatscreen TV, I cannot think of anything else?
If anyone else can help me solve this issue of not being able to use a Flatscreen TV as a second output display, I would sure appreciate it.

I know the VGA output works, I have connected projectors to it in the past, and I know about the FN/F4 key combination also Strg/Alt F1/F3 etc. to get the VGA port active and display on multiple monitors, my monitor is set to output Notebook and Monitor in the Intel software.

The only other solution I have found is a VGA to DVI converter, then use a DVI to HDMI cable to convert the video signal, this still does not explain why I cannot connect the VGA to VGA though.

Hope someone can help

Many thanks

Smee

Which resolution did you choose? Is it supported by the TV?

Thank you for your reply.

I tried 800x600 and 1024x768 96dpi

The reason for trying these two was to start with the lowest resolution possible.

I am unsure of what resolution is supported.

According to the manual both resolutions should work (see "PC Input Signal Reference Chart", supported are 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x768, 1360x768, 1280x1024, 1920x1080, all with 60 Hz).

I'd try to connect another computer to the TV and see if that works.

That could work only if the VGA to DVI converter really outputs a digital signal (DVI-D, not DVI-A). But I suppose these converters are expensive...

Thank you again aspettl,

It looks like I am connecting in the right way, and that my laptop and TV supports the resolutions tested.

I am now wondering if the problem is my new TV, do you think I should contact Sony customer service because I have explored all the probabilities which could have been my fault?
My laptop should be outputting the correct VGA resolution with a 15-pin VGA connector.

Can you please follow these steps?
1. connect notebook and TV via VGA
2. switch on TV
3. boot the notebook from a Linux Live CD
4. start a terminal
5. issue the following command:
Code: Select all
xrandr -q
6. post the result here

This way we could check if both devices find each other and which resolutions both think should be supported.
Sorry I have no idea how to do this in Windows.

Code: Select all
SZ    Pixels   Physical   Refresh
*0   800x600   271mmx203mm   *60

Current rotation    -   normal
Current reflection   -   none
Rotations Possible   -   normal
Reflections possible   -   none

Ok this was new ground, you now have the results of my screen, I found an old SUSE Linus 9.3 which I used for this.

Funny how only one screen resolution is outputted?

Ok, I should have mentioned that you should use a half way recent distribution. ;-)
Let's say something from the last 18 months. There you'll have newer intel drivers and a new xrandr version which will lead to more useful outputs.

Thank you hikaru,

I used openSUSE Gnome 11.2 Live CD for this result, I think the LVDS is my TV!
While connected with the live CD, I tested the TV to see if was recognising the computer external connection, and it was still failing to recognise a PC input.

Code: Select all
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 2048 x 2048
VGA connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768       60.0*
   800x600        60.3
   640x480        59.9
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768       60.0*+   85.0     75.0     70.1     60.0
   832x624        74.6
   800x600        85.1     72.2     75.0     60.3     56.2
   640x480        85.0     72.8     75.0     59.9
   720x400        85.0
   640x400        85.1
   640x350        85.1
TMDS disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Thank you for guiding me with the software, I did not think it would matter, but it clearly makes a huge difference.

Ok, that looks better! :-)

smee wrote:I think the LVDS is my TV!
No, LVDS is your notebook display. VGA is your TV. Now try the following command and see if something happens on your TV screen:
Code: Select all
xrandr --output VGA --mode 1024x768 --same-as LVDS
This should clone your notebook display to the TV.

But according to the specs of your TV this mode is not supported, which is strange. The only supported resolution that is detected is 640x480. So if the first command didn't work, try this one:
Code: Select all
xrandr --output VGA --mode 640x480 --right-of LVDS
Now you should have an extended desktop with the TV right of your notebook. Of course this is no reasonable resolution on a 40" wide screen, but you'll see if it works in principle.

Re: V2020, VGA output, no signal recognized on Flatscreen TV (Sony Bravia EX501)

I followed your advice firstly with no success.

Because I couldn't get the PC input to activate and recognise the signal, I looked deeper. I then found a setting located at:
Code: Select all
Press the HOME key on the remote
Navigate to->     Settings
Navigate to->        External Inputs
Navigate to->           AV Preset
Navigate to->              PC (change this from Auto to ALWAYS)

This then keeps the PC input active at all times, there must be a problem with the Auto signal recognition, even when using the correct resolution.

After I did this I could view my Laptop screen on my PC.

The documentation is very poor on this Sony Bravia EX501 series, the only helpful documentation is the i-manual located inside the TV which is of little help when configuring the TV.

Thanks to this forum and the helpful diagnostics, I managed to work out where the fault was, along with a bit of luck in finding the requires setting under AV Preset which I would not have expected.

Thank you hikaru and aspettl, I would not have solved this without your help, technology is advancing and documentation is getting poorer!
