Your graphics card is faulty so you need to change it, but you want to know if it can stay? :? I'm not sure if I understand you correctly.
If your concern is only in connection with the RAM upgrade, this doesn't affect the graphics card.

I'm not a graphics expert, but I know that you can insert an NVIDIA GT 8600M and surely some other models. But you can as well insert another x700. The main task will be to find a replacement card.
I'd suggest to PM An-Dr.Zej. He's not very active in the English forums, but has substantiated knowledge about graphics cards and is our M-series specialist in the German forums.

Hi

sorry for the confusion..... i think the graphics card is faulty. can the nVidia GeForce 8600M GT....go in as a straight swap as i am finding it impossible to find a ati radeon x700 anywhere......

i have uploaded some photo's of my screen which is leading me to believe the graphcis card is on its way out. suggestions are welcome on the cause.....?
also if the nVidia GeForce 8600M GT can go in as a straight replacement does the memory need to match that of the ram on my computer or does that not matter.... I'm pretty new to this sort of thing so any suggestions are welcome.......

Yes, that looks like a broken graphics card.
According to this post of An-Dr.Zej in the german forum, the 8600M shouldn't cause any problems:
https://www.amilo-forum.de/topic,29957,-8600M-GT-256MB-DDR2-RAM-Test-Erfahrungsbericht.html

I could try to translate the important parts, but since it exceeds my knowledge I can't give you any useful tips. I just asked him via PM to join this thread.

Well, I'm here now.
When I have understood the last posting correctly, you answered your question yourself?
What I can say, is the following:
The Laptop has got no problem with 2 GB RAM and another Graphic Card.
There is an issue with the 8600M GT on Windows 7, when you install (older?) drivers:
The internal display can flicker. It's easy to solve this problem by usind the programm "powermizer switch".

If there is another question, let me know.
I'll try to help.

I wouldnt take any pads... do it like many other users and use copper plates for between heatpipe and gpu. I used Arctic Silver 5 and it works best!
A howto is written down here: http://www.amilo-forum.de/topic,26768,- ... 1437G.html
Unfortunately its, however, in german. Maybe a good translator can translate it readable into the english language.

Hi Again,

Updated the graphics card i ended up using Akasa-AK-450-5G-silver-thermal-compound and my laptop works a treat, Also upgraded the ram to 2gb.

Having one problem though and wondered if anyone else has come across the same. My come put keeps turning its self off. It doesnt even shut down properly it just switches straight off...and the when i switch it back on it will reboot but then goes off before it has even got the the windows screen :?

Any ideas?

This sounds like a safety shutdown due to too high temperatures. Most likely there is a bad connection between CPU/GPU die and heat pipe, which is a common error after works on the cooling system. You'll have to disassemble and reapply the thermal compound.
If I read this correctly, you used thermal compound for CPU and GPU, but didn't use a copper plate to bridge the height difference (0.6mm?) between CPU and GPU. This inevitably leads to problems like the one you describe.

He meant between GPU and heatpipe. For the CPU, you have to use the thermal compound like ever.

Correct! I didn't realize how ambiguous my statement was. The height difference exists indeed between CPU and GPU, but the copper plate has to be put between GPU and heat pipe to bridge the gap.
