RAM upgrade for Amilo Pro V2030

Postby wheeliebow » Mon Aug 30, 2010 9:08 pm

I am a new member on this forum so i apologise if this question has already been asked.

I have tried to upgrade my laptop from 2 x 256MB to 2 x 1GB to move up from 1/2GB to 2GB total RAM.

I have carried out this operation before without any problems on my Toshiba laptop so I'm familiar with the process etc.
I purchased 2 new 1GB RAM cards (Kingston) which are DDR2 and compatible with 800mhz, 667mhz and 533mhz, the latter being specified in the laptop technical data.A salesperson in the store where I bought the new memory, advised their suitability.

On installation and restarting the laptop, I checked the system info in Control Panel, and found that only 1GB of memory is visible.
I re-checked the installation and repeated the check after start-up and still only 1GB of memory is visible.

I then carried out a scan check via the free utility at WWW.CRUCIAL.COM/UK and this confirmed that only half of each RAM chip was showing in the scan result. The result displays both slots occupied.
I then removed one card and repeated the checks above and noted that the crucial scan showed one slot empty and the other showing only 1/2GB.
Clearly, the laptop is only able to read/access half of each memory card only.

I have removed the new cards and installed 2 spare memory cards (Hynix) leftover from the upgrade of my Toshiba which are 1/2GB each and I currently have 1GB of memory visible which is correct.

So is there something I can do to correct the situation or are the new memory cards incompatible with my Amilo Pro ?

regards

I don't know the v2030 that well, but according to the datasheet 2GB are supported. However, besides the always existing small chance that certain modules won't work although they should be compatible, there is another criterion to take into account: the chip organization.
Depending on how the DRAM devices are organized on the memory module, the BIOS might be unable to detect them or to determine their capacity correctly. I guess this applies here, because when the v2030 was designed, 800MHz modules weren't yet available on the market, and therefore not all configurations that are common today might have been considered.

I'd return the modules you got and exchange them for slower ones (PC2-4200 or PC2-5300) which should have a more conservative chip organization with smaller but more DRAM devices.

Thanks Hikaru,

I have just been and returned the Ram chips as they were not suitable.
I note your comments regarding the 800mhz issue but the packaging did state compatible with 533mhz as well.

I have found some info on this forum regarding Transcend memory which has been installed successfully by the member so I am currently considering these as an option.

Many thanks for you reply

I've just come in on this discussion. I've bought the Kingston low density memory (KVR533D2S4K2/2G, kit of 2), installed them and got ... nothing. The machine doesn't boot up. On replacing the original 256 module, everything works fine. Any suggestions from anyone?

I use 2 x 1GB of Kingston 533Mhz on my V2030 and all is well.

I'll post up the part number when I get home tonight.
