AMILO xi1547 RAM upgrade

Postby kanenas » Sun Sep 05, 2010 2:09 pm

Hello.

I just did some hardware updates on my old xi1547 and am wondering if I can upgrade the DRAM to 4GB.

I've replaced the disk with a 500GB WD Scorpio Black, the burned out x1800 graphics card with a 1GB ATI HD 4670, and the BIOS with Alienware's 1.19W.

So far so good. Everything works just fine.

I would like now to upgrade the RAM to 4GB.
Can I do that (the Alienware BIOS supports it) or is there some sort of restriction in the xi1547 hardware?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that with the above configuration (Alienware BIOS and a loaded ATI card), the xi1547 can't support more than 3GB.
Is there such a limit imposed by the system's electronics? Has anybody ever tried something similar with the xi1546/1547?

Thank you.

We have a topic concerning this in our german forums:

The essential conclusion is, that 4GB should work with Alienware BIOS 1.19w. But you'll only have 3.2GB actually available.

Much appreciated for the link.

I'll go ahead and get the new DRAM chips. Hopefully the 1GB on the graphics card will not fry the memory controller.

Thanks much.
