Keyboard , touchpad, usb port, not working

Postby shindz » Wed Sep 08, 2010 3:08 pm

Hi guys, I have an Amilo li 1718, and recently i meet some issue: my laptop stop working normally : here are the issues:
I can't boot up properly without any freeze: the keyboard and touchpad keep on freezing when I start the computer.
on the beginning , I couldn't start the computer. I change the buffer battery (cmos) as the this one was dead. but I still meet these issues.
Today I could start up the computer but once one the desktop, by moving the mouse cursor through the touchpad, all get frozen: keyboard and touchpad. I can't use the usb port as just don't work since this problem starts.
please help me with this issue.

Thanks.

Does this also happen when you boot in safe mode or from a Linux live CD?

yes, i tried the live cd, live usb. sometimes the computer froze before loading components from live cd, sometimes it froze just as soon as the desktop shows itself, after i touch the touchpad. i have a dual boot, the problem it the same with windows.
one more thing. every time, there is a noise from the speaker, i thought the speaker had some trouble , i switch it off and plug a headset and there is this noise, i can randomly modify the bios setup because the keyboard keep freezing at random time

This sounds like a mayor hardware defect. The only simple reason I can think of is a broken RAM module, but I don't consider this to be very likely. Can you please try to run memtest for some hours?

I have it running for 3 hours and I have no errors reports . As I have 2 Ram of 2GB, I tested just one of them and since no errors were reported I tried booting with the one I checked, i had a report from the boot that there is a problem, which is not related to the software but to hardware. there was something about the processor, but i did not have enough time to read it through.
the keyboard keep freezing, I open it to clean up the dust, but the result is still the same.

I start up the system again, and from the bios menu, the amount of Ram is well recognize, 2GB, as System Memory I have 633KB , is that normal ? i did not pay attention to how it was before.

I noticed something: from the bios' diagnostic , when the laptop start, I see something like System memory and Video Memory are shadowed , is that normal ?

still no change. the noise is still there, but just comes at random, I tried to flash the BIOS but the problem is still there.
I thought the touchpad had some trouble, I plug it out and there is still this noise and the keyboard keeps on freezing. the usb ports are still nonoperational

This is both normal. The 633kB system memory are the famous 640kB (minus video memory) that should be enough for everybody.
That system and video memory are shadowed means nothing else that they are reserved by the BIOS and not accessible by the operation system directly.

A defective CPU might explain the freezes. But I fail to see why this should affect the USB subsystem. Do you have any dmesg output when plugging in a USB device, even if it doesn't work?
And I have no idea what this might have to do with your sound issue.
Do you see any strange entries in /var/log/messages right after a freeze?

i could trace the problem if I could use at least my usb Mouse / keyboard, i can't do dmesg since no keyboard responds, in the same way, I can not access the log file for the same reason.
Since the beginning, I'm writing from another laptop.
just to mention, the keyboard freezes on the bios menu too.

You could modify a Live-CD to automatically display these files from the HDD or copy them via network after booting.

I think the easiest way would be to use Slax:
http://www.slax.org/

Get a Slax ISO, unpack it, add the commands you need (establish ssh connection to your other laptop, copy files) to /etc/rc.d/rc.local and create a new ISO from the installed system. You can find the instructions here:
http://www.slax.org/documentation_customize_slax.php
Instead of changing the wallpaper like in the example, you change the autostart routine.
