hello, i sound really thick, but which way do I insert my sd card in the express slot, I've tried all the help pages, and they don't show enough detail, and I don't want to force it. Thanks

You don't. ;-)
The ExpressCard slot is for ExpressCards while you insert SD cards into the SD card slot. These are two totally different technologies.
There are adapters to insert SD cards into ExpressCard slots but usually you don't need them since you have a dedicated SD card slot. This SD card slot might be combined with MMC or Sony Memory Stick, but not with ExpressCard.

If you'd say which notebook you have I could give you more detailed information.

hello, my notebook is an amilo 3710 and the only slot i can see which looks the same size as an sd card is on the front, will that be it? It has a little flat plastic thing which slides out, but because it is smaller than the card, I was afraid to put the card in.

Yes, the slot right of the audio jacks is the SD card slot. You might have a dummy card in it to prevent it from dust. If so, take it out! This dummy should have the same size like an SD card.
Unfortunately SD cards vary very slightly in thickness, so one might sit tighter than the other, but they all should fit into the slot. Just try to insert it with the pins forward and down.

If it still doesn't work, can you please attach a photo of your SD card and the dummy?
