AMILO PI 2550: Experiences Windows 7 (32/64 BITS) vs Vista?

Postby Alex0123 » Sun Oct 17, 2010 4:51 pm

I am currently using Windows Vista 32 bits edition which was supplied with my Amilo PI 2550. Since I need to do a reinstallation I am considering to install Windows 7. I am just wondering what your experience is with Windows 7 on the Amilo PI 2550.

I have a few questions (please keep in mind that I am actually wondering how Windows 7 (32 or 64 bits) will run on the hardware of Amilo PI 2550. I currently have Windows 7 running on my desktop.)

* What is Windows sevens system performance while using applications in comparison to Windows Vista 32 bits on Amilo PI 2550?
* Does Windows 7 64 bits install properly without having to install unsigned drivers on the Amilo PI 2550? If so about which hardware are we talking? (I noticed that my notebook was supplied with Windows Vista in 32 bits.)
* What and how much is the advantage of running Windows 7 64 bits edition vs Windows Windows 7 32 bits edition?

I can only tell you about the general differences between 32/64bit systems.
1. 64bit systems are able to support 4GB of RAM or above without performance drawbacks. Your chipset supports up to 8GB but I doubt whether your BIOS will do. Officially it even only supports 2GB, so I guess going beyond 4GB wikl be impossible.
2. Programs compiled in 64bit can run faster if (and only if) that has been considered during the software design process. This usually only applies to software that is made for number crunching (mostly scientific applications).

On the other hand programs compiled in 64bit need a bit more memory due to the wider memory address range.

As a conclusion, 64bit systems usually don't perform better in every day situations.
