Dead after Linux-ing

Postby Enzik » Wed Nov 03, 2010 10:26 pm

Hi,

I have an inexplicable problem with my Amilo 2727.

I've used this laptop for couple of years, without any problems. Today I decided to install an additional OS (openSUSE) next to the default Vista... Everything went OK, after the installation I worked both with Vista and Linux.

Having the openSUSE run I left the laptop for about an hour running (on AC, but no tasks, just the WiFi was on). After I came back the laptop was dead. The leds of power and WiFi were on, although the notebook didn't react to any of my actions. I turned it off by pressing the power button for couple of seconds. After that I turned it on again, although without any reaction (the power led turned ON, the DVD-ROM gave two sounds and then the fan turned off as the laptop). I tried to turned it on only on battery, only on AC, on both and the results were always the same. The laptop is dead. The fan turnes off after the DVD-ROM passes twice, the laptop turnes off (on battery, on AC it stays still with power LED lighting).

Is it possible that the linux didn't manage well the cooling and something has burnt? Or maybe it is a coincidence? Do you recognize the symptoms?

Thanks for any help,

Pawel

Hi,

did you wait for the laptop to cool down? (Was it hot?)

Did you try the hardware reset, in especially removing all power sources for a while?

Do you have warranty? If not, then you could open the laptop and check the cooling system.

Hi,

thanks for answer.

It was not hot, so I didn't wait before next attempts to turn it on.

I did try the hardware reset, nothing changed.

The warranty ended couple of months ago, I opened the laptop and everything looks all right, the cooling system doesn't seem to be somehow overheated (like local changes in colour). I didn't however remove it to check the components.

Did you notice any different behavior while under Linux compared to Windows? I'm speaking of unusual fan or HDD behavior.
There are differences between Linux and Windows when it comes to ACPI management, which in combination with certain hardware might result in a constantly or non-working fan or repeated HDD spin-ups/downs. Unfortunately I'm not that familiar with the hardware of the Li 2727 and its Linux support.

Maybe you can find something in the logs of your opensuse installation that will give you further information. To access it you have to unmount the HDD from the laptop, attach it to another computer (e.g. via an external casing) and examine the files in /var/log. Interesting files are acpid, kern.log, messages and syslog.
