Amilo Pi 1505 - Intel 3945 connection problems

Postby ralphyd » Thu Nov 18, 2010 4:18 pm

When I power up the laptop from cold with the wiFi switch on, the wifi light turns on and the connection works for 5 minutes, then it disconnects and no networks are found.
After a couple of hours, the wifi might reconnect during a few minutes, then disconnect again until a few hours later.
If I power up the laptop once it's warm and with the Wifi switch on, the Wifi light doesn't usually doesn't usually turn on and in Device Manager the adapter does not appear. When it does appear, the adapter properties dialog indicates the device is working correctly.

I've tried disabling and uninstalling the adapter driver, the current one is the latest from Intel. The one on the FS site is version 10.

Firmware version: 1.14C
XP Home Version 2002 SP3
Intel Pro Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection driver version: 13.3.0.137

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Can you try another operating system, e.g. some Linux distribution via a Live CD? This way you could determine if it's a hardware or software problem. The Intel 3945 chipset is well supported, but depending on the distribution you might need to install a package like firmware-iwlwifi via the package manager.
Before you boot the Live-CD make sure that the wireless switch is enabled.

Started up with a live Ubuntu 9.04 CD and had problems similar to those on XP, so yes, it looked like a hardware problem.
I bought a used 3945 card, ex Dell, on eBay for 6 Euros and problem fixed.
Installing it was easy.
Thanks hikaru for your input.

I've been having what I think is the same problem. I haven't tested it in linux as suggested, but I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem caused by a loose connection as I discovered the card sometimes disappears from device manager when I move the laptop. Can someone point me to a guide to take apart this model (Pi 1505) and find the wireless card? I want to make sure it's set in place properly in the first instance, and if that won't fix it, try replacing it.

And if I need to replace it, would I need to use the same card? Or what other ones would work OK?

Thanks all, I've installed things in a PC before but never a laptop so all general advice very welcome too.
