Li 2727 RAM upgrade error??

Postby echo3 » Thu Nov 18, 2010 7:41 pm

Currently 1GB RAM installed in Amilo Li 2727 and have just purchased 1GB to upgrade.

The ram is PC5300-555 1GB-DDR2-667MHz.

When I slot it in, the laptop powers up but screen stays blank and does not even go to BIOS intro screen.
Is this the wrong type of RAM? Any ideas what problem is? Thanks.

The module is of the correct type.
But there is always a certain risk that a specific module won't work due to electric tolerances. Sometimes it's enough to just swap the modules in the slots. Have you tried that?
If that still doesn't work, trying another brand might help.

I've tried switching them around, still same issue. Maybe requires different brand.
One thingI've noticed, not sure if is relevant, but one ram module looks different to the other, in that the one already installed has one row of black suares across it, the purchased one has two rows of black suares.
The one already installed is: 1GB 2Rx16 PC2-5300S-555-12

You mean one RAM module has all chips on the same side of the board while the other one has them distributed on both sides? This likely (but not safely) indicates a different chip organization. Some boards don't like one or the other, or at least not a mix of different chip organizations. Did you try to run the new module alone?

The S in the label of your old module stands for "small outline", often abbreviated as SO-DIMM and refers to the smaller design in comparison to desktop modules. So that doesn't matter since the new module is SO-DIMM too.
But I'm not absolutely sure what this "2Rx16" means. I think it refers to the number of ranks and the chip organisation.

The safest thing would be to insert two identical modules.

Installed module has four chips either side, new one has 8 smaller chips either side. Just tried the new one on its own and does not work, so brand is nogood. New module says Maxdata swissbit made in Germany.
