ATI RADEON MOBILITY X700 problems

Postby cipak » Mon Nov 13, 2006 2:01 pm

Hi,

After trying to fix the problem I have on my own, I finally decided to post a message on this forum. Hopefully somebody will be able to help me.

I have an Amilo M1437G notebook with an ATI radeon mobility x700 video card. I've been using it without problems for 10 months until one day when the display started showing thin vertical lines. They were shown from the moment the notebook was started up. In Windows, the lines were more colorful and usually the notebook hanged or restarted after a few seconds.

However, it worked in Safe Mode (no hangs), although the lines were still there.

I took it to service and they replaced the video card. (although it took 2 weeks)

After a few months, the problem is back. The guarantee is over so I had to solve it myself this time.

I opened the notebook and found that the heatpads between the video card and the radiator were laid over the coils too (the coils are taller) so I think the memory chips and the GPU have not been in full contact with the radiator. I put them properly, added some heat transmission paste. Also, I'm using NHC with the ACPI option "Lufter Off-line" unchecked, so the cooler works more.

I installed the Omega drivers, I read that they are better than the default ATI drivers.

The problem shows more rarely now (every one or two hours), with the system hanging with a black screen or rebooting or showing a black screen and recovering with a different error each time.

Any other hints of what else should I try?

If the only solution is to buy a new card, where could I buy it online? The last time I went to service I had to wait two weeks for the card. Also, if there is a video card with less performance but more robust, I would like to have that one. I am a programmer, I don't need fast 3D nor high frequencies.

Thank you,

You could try to lower core and memory frequency. Maybe another (better) head conductive paste could achieve something, too. But I doubt it.

The only vendor of MXM cards I know of is mxm-upgrade.com.

ATI RADEON MOBILITY X700 problems

I had the same problem with my amilo m1437 like Ciprian Serbu only when it happent it was one month after the guarantee. My amilo did also show lines and in safe mode it was a little bit more stable.

So i bought a new mxm x700 card on ebay and i got it a month later. Then the install went good and i used heatpasta for the processor and gfu.

The laptop started and it went on like a train with no errors and a beautifull screen. But there it happent. After 30 minutes or so, the laptop went out in a flash and it didn't go on anymore.

Now i have a laptop that won't boot. The DVDplayer and HDD will make a sound when i put it on, but there is nothing on the screen and the fan doesn't turn.

Does somebody has an answer? The laptop is broken for some month now and it is a waste of money to let it stay off.
