Amilo 1718 USB problem

Postby retropedro » Mon Feb 07, 2011 6:34 pm

Hi guys, I'm trying to fix an Amilo 1718 for a friend of mine - the main problem is with the USB ports. About a month ago, for no reason, they just stopped recognising devices. All of them, simultaneously. It was under Vista Home Premium, where it says in the balloon that it can't install the device - everything from flash drives to USb cameras, even though drivers for all of them had already been installed. I tried re-installing the drivers for the devices and the ports, and finally opted for a format and fresh install of XP, but now XP freezes any time something is plugged into the USB. I guess it's not a driver issue, but what else could it be? When I give the old lappie a good shake I can hear loose bits around the area of the USB ports on the back. Could some cable be loose? How do I open the chassis to get to the connectors to check them?

Guys I'll be so appreciative if you can help!

Many thanks ;) R

Okay guys, quick update: I removed the service cover and found two loose screws rattling around in there, so put them back in place. Do you think that they could have rolled over and shorted out one of the USB ports? Can anyone direct me to a service manual or page that explains how to disassemble this notebook so that I can get to the ports from the inside and check them? Is there a general method of disassembling a notebook? I tried unscrewing everything I could from the bottom, but I've never got into a notebook before and this was no different :S
