Intel Core 2 Duo for a L1310G?

Postby silverarrow » Thu Feb 24, 2011 12:11 pm

I have done some search on this model and found that RAM and certain specs differ a bit withing the L1310G model group. The two most noticeable are the battery shape and the RAM, which in my computer is set to max 2GB, and came originally with 1GB. I have to make this laptop live a bit longer as I need it for an extra workstation.

I have installed different linux programs, like Ubuntu and Puppy, and now recently Fedora. Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 is like Vista on this laptop! (With syrup in the machinery) The lighter version lubuntu seems to run fine, but still a bit tatty. Now I want to try upgrading the CPU from Celeron M to something like a Core 2 duo. Do I need to worry about issues with heating, overload or something like that with a more powerful processor? How do I research what kind of processors that are compatible with my hardware and better than the Celeron M 1,53MHz. If I understand this correctly the Celeron series have a low cashe memory, that are improved in the Core 2 duo series, which is now become the standard. Actually I remember processors with duo cores were the only ones worth going for even when I had just bought this laptop, but at the time I knew nothing about hard ware at all. I have found a couple of threads on the subject in this forum, but I am still not shore what to look for in a upgrade.

Again: How and what to check for to find a compatible CPU replacement?

I see people are a bit reluctant to post their thoughts on the subject. It is a bit tricky upgrading a processor, and I might have asked too generally formulated question. I have googled for hours on this subject, and there are generally two points of view; either it's not worth it, go buy a new computer or it's well worth it, you will get a faster laptop, it's all about finding the right processor. For some reason I think it's worthy a try: When this laptop was new it had issues with over heating, it smelled fried, and was twice in for service during the warranty period the first few months of it's life. One of the guys who did the repair said some of the new Amilos were identical to mine, only difference was core 2 duo processor and more RAM, and that I might want to get a better CPU. However, I forgot about it, when my Amilo started behaving better.

Any thoughts or hints about sources to search for information are very much appreciated.

This is my results so far; and I keep finding contradictory information. It might be that a Celeron M 450 is the best alternative for an upgrade, and would probably work. They might still be available even if their not in production any more. However, I found this site recommending other processors appearantly available in socket M.

Upgrade recommendations

Your upgrade choices are:

* The fastest socket M processors are Core 2 Duo Mobile T7600 and core 2 Duo Mobile T7600G. The T7600G has unlocked clock multiplier and can be overclocked, but it's very expensive and very difficult to find.
* If the T7600 / T7600G is too expensive for you then consider upgrading to slower Core 2 Duo Mobile processors.
* If your motherboard doesn't support Core 2 Duo Mobile CPUs then your best upgrade option is a Core Duo T2700.

Any thoughts on the subject?
