USB 1.1 instead of 2.0, why? Amilo pa1510

Postby donone » Wed Mar 09, 2011 6:04 pm

Amilo pa1510 running Windows 7 Extreme
After problems of slow speed on USB I checked the Device Manager USB Controllers.

ATI I/O Communications Processor USB 1.1 OHCI Controller
ATI I/O Communications Processor USB 1.1 OHCI Controller
ATI I/O Communications Processor USB 2.0 EHCI Controller

My expectancy was three USB 2.0 controllers. Also I have no sure way of checking which of the sockets is the 2.0

Any help appreciated.

Hi,

it is normal that there is only one EHCI controller - that doesn't mean that only one port supports USB 2.0.

Thank you for that information. I would be grateful if you would elaborate a little. Are the other two variable or do they have to be given instructions to switch to higher speed?
One of the sockets accepts a WD Passport Essentials disk drive but not my wireless mouse or other devices, simply says USB device not recognised.
The other devises work in the other two sockets. I do not get any message about speed though the option is set to inform if a device could work faster.
I am a little hazy on this and would welcome some additional info.

No (there's only one EHCI controller that works for all ports, see also Wikipedia).

I'd try to delete the drivers for the devices in the device manager. If that doesn't work, maybe your Windows doesn't accept any (!) new USB device (i.e., that has never been connected before)? I had that problem once. You should do a hardware reset (see hardware FAQ), that may solve the problem.

Why do you think USB 2.0 doesn't work? Are data transfers too slow (how slow?)?

Thank you for that helpful information. I seem to pick up that the three sockets are not individually related to the three controllers one for one.
Yes I get different speeds some of which seem very slow. I do understand that it could be due to the makeup of the items being copied.
I will try your suggestions

[Edit 1] after reading the wiki you suggested it became apparent, to me at least, that most problems are when I copy between two USB 2 devices. It seems the speed is shared between all devices on the single USB 2 controller. That would account for probably half speed. Pity there isn't a controller per socket.

[Edit 2]
USB to Firewire WD Passport to WD Book typically 12-15 MB/s
USB to USB same drives same files typicall 3.64 MB/s
Does that indicate anything (other than the obvious)?

Yes, that's correct.

Then it is definitely USB 2.0 ("High speed"). With "Full speed" (the maximum in USB 1.1) only about 1 MB/s is possible.
Of course, it isn't exactly fast, from the internal disk to a USB 2.0 hard disk normally 20 MB/s should be realistic (or even a bit more, depending on the controller).
