Amilo Xi 2428 - Wireless not working on Windows 7 64-bit

Postby beerbelly » Tue May 03, 2011 8:11 pm

Hi,

I was recently forced to upgrade the OS on my Xi 2428 (it was Vista 32-bit, and no amount of repair would fix it). So I chose Windows 7 64-bit, and was surprised when the wireless didn't work: the driver installed correctly and the device manager showed it as properly installed, but no SSIDs were showing up even when placed right next to the router (I checked with my other laptop just to be on the safe side - it works).

I searched long and hard before posting here, but apparently the 2428 is obscure enough that the info isn't readily available. From what I gather it seems to be the same problem across other models: some switch for the wireless module is off by default and has to be turned on either by a physical button, some Fn combo, or software solution.

I tried every suggestion for other models I came across: I tried updating the drivers both from Fujitsu and the Intel site; I updated everything Windows Update had to offer (even though I know it doesn't do anything helpful); I upgraded the BIOS; I installed the Launch Manager for some other model (the 2727 maybe) but it didn't help; and after looking around the laptop 5 times I couldn't find a button to push that would activate the wireless.

I'm fresh out of ideas..
Anybody know something about this model ?

Thanks..

I think default Windows 7 very likely should detect internal wireless card. Failing any web search identification of your card you could unscrew the lid on the back of you Amilo and write down numbers you find there. Wireless card is one of the cards that are easily removed (and replaced) on the mother board. If you have a new or more obscure external network adapter you might need to get the drivers from the manufacturer. This is not as difficult as it sounds, there are countless brands out there, but not nearly as many producers of the internal card. I have had many wireless adapters over the years of different brand, and it turned out that most of them had ralink internals and drivers.

With a new wireless adapter there usually comes a driver-CD which has separate driver installations for either Windows 7, XP or Vista, I not shore for 32 and 64 bit. I'm just thinking out loud here, hoping you might get some idea on how to go about this issue.

If you remover drivers and go online by wire, does your OS identify your wireless card enough to do an automatic driver search?

If you boot up in some kind of live linux CD you should at least detect if there are any issues with the hardware, but if it recently worked in Vista, I doubt there are. Ubuntu are often very good with wireless drivers.
