Amilo L7300 boot from cdrom

Postby arammeister » Sat May 14, 2011 1:49 pm

Hi! I have Amilo L7300 and want to format the drive C. I have a Windows XP SP3 cd and want to boot the laptop from the cdrom to start the format process. In the setup screen I set to boot from cd but it won't work. It tries to read the cd for approximately 5 seconds (with strange voices) and after that starts Windows. However, when Windows is already loaded, it can read the cd, so I think the problem is with the boot process...

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Make shore the CD is clean. Try press f12 for bootup options, and choose "boot from CD" manually, that helps with quirky hangups. Is this the XP2 repair/installation CD? If trouble still persists you could burn a bootable CD with G-parted and make the partitions and formatting you need, there's all file system options available. In Puppy Linux there's also a partition table that reads your hard drive an lets you make any change you want to make, formatting tools and all. It runs as live CD.

If you just made the bootable CD, errors happen, and it could be worth burning a new one. Make shore you burn at lowest speed, and choose to burn as bootable if that's an option in your burner. I find easy iso to be pretty simple, but it's possible to mess up

yes! the problem was with my windows installation cd. i tried another cd and it worked. but, this last one is a russian version of windows, and i want an english one.

so, could you please write in more detail how to prepare a bootable windows xp cd? i checked a video in youtube how to prepare a bootable cd, but it didn't work. i have nero 10, i prepared an image in my hard drive, burned the cd from this image (as shown in the youtube video), and tried to format amilo, but a black screen appeared and no more reaction.

thanks!

It's been a while since I have had Nero, and cannot remember the exact procedure. I usually use easy iso to burn bootable CDs in windows. With all burners I have used, I have had to mess around a bit with them. The most common fault is that despite seemingly correct settings, it burns an entire folder, as folder, and not the iso image you want. It should not be that difficult, but you might have to try a couple of times to make the burner do what you want it too. When the CD is burned correctly it boot up fine. If you decide to try Easy iso, it has worked best for me when I choose: "Burn iso" from "iso-menu" down in the left corner, then a window opens and you choose what you want to burn (either in documents, downloads or where ever you have it stored). Second common fault is when burning in normal or default speed. I don't know why, but slowest speed is preferable. I think XP SP2 might be available from microsoft or a torrent some where if you suspect there might be an error with the document containing the iso image.

Thanks, Silverarrow! I asked my friend to find a bootable cd. If he doesn't, I'll try that Easy iso (hope I find it free in internet).

Another issue with my Amilo is with its wifi. I have set up a wireless network in the apartment, and can access this network via other wireless devices (laptops, iphone), but not with Amilo. It asks for the network password, and when I type the password, it tries to connect for a while but without success. After that, my wireless network is at the first position on the list of networks. It will sound strange but in this situation the laptop downloads the windows updates, but, however, I can't connect to internet (neither with explorer, nor mozilla).

Is this a common issue?

Hi again
Easy iso is free software, and it should be possible to make Nero behave.

I'm not shore about the wireless, I don't think it's particular for Amilos. Wireless cards go bad and need to be replaced sometimes, but if your computer downloads Windows Updates it might be something else. On my Amilo the wireless has stopped working at all, and has to be replaced. However I have this external wireless that picks up signals better than most internals ones, so I haven't been in a hurry to search for one.

I have a Dell computer that has weird issue with wireless. I connects to my network , but keeps connecting and disconnecting and will not stay on for more than a few minutes. It's weird because other computers go on the net with no problem, and my Dell has no problem with other wireless networks.

Regards

about the wireless problem, just to give some ideas:

- firewall (Windows' and/or third party firewall) is blocking internet traffic (but not Windows Update).
- the router may have compatibility issues.(try to search for a firmware update).
- the router may be configured such that this particular notebook does not get what it is supposed to get (port forwarding, etc).
- WLAN driver's malfunction (try to find the latest drivers for it).

To troubleshoot, try to ping e.g. www.google.com in the cmd.exe console and look up "ipconfig /all".

Best,
Borkar
