RAID Problem - 500 GB WD HDD for M3438G

Postby Snoggie » Thu Jun 16, 2011 8:17 pm

Hii Guys,

I have a big problem with my old M3438G, I'm trying to upgrade the 2 HDDs to 500 GB, but I can't get the RAID to recognize them :(

I saw another thread in here regarding the same problem, where they closed it off as a problem with the power usage...

In this case the new HDDs actually use 0,5 mA less power than the old ones.. so that dosen't seem to be the problem :(

I've updated the BIOS to 1.10C, apparently the newest availible :S ?

Could this be a jumper problem, or how does that work with SATA drives :S ?

Can anyone help me with this, would be greatly appreciated !! :D

Best Regards,

Christina

Which types of HDDs are you talking about? The M-series Amilos are quite choosy when it comes to detecting HDDs.
It could be a jumper problem because the M-series only works with SATA 1.5GB/s drives. Some faster drives support switching to this mode via a jumper.

Are the HDDs detected correctly when not in RAID?

Thanks for your quick reply :D !

We are talking this HDD:

The WD Scorpio Black WD5000BPKT - 500 GB - SATA-300...

They are not detected at any time unfortunately :S

Do you know how to make these HDDs run in 1.5 GB/s :S ?
How should I set jumpers.. ? Unfortunately I don't have any jumpers at the moment :(

Oops, now I see you already mentioned you have WD drives.
Afaik M-series laptops won't work with WD drives because they don't fully support SATA 1.5GP/s. We had this problem several times in the past and I doubt something has changed.
Samsung drives were known to work well in the M-series. The older ones had jumpers and iirc the newer ones worked even without jumpers. So if you have any chance to return the WD's, replace them with Samsungs.

At least that's how it was half a year ago or so. I can't tell if Samsung has any newer drives that might not be compatible anymore.

Hmm, unfortunately that didn't work either:-S

I've tryed 5 different types of HDDs now, all in pair of twos...

I'm getting the feeling I'm doing something completely wrong:-(:-(

Do you have an idea:-)?

Can you please try the drives one by one? Does the BIOS detect them correctly without RAID? I'm not sure if the RAID controller adds another obstacle. Afair none of the threads we have about HDD problems in M-series deals with RAID setups.

I've tryed them one by one aswell, sorry for my english ;)

The BIOS never detected any of the new HDDs, only the old ones... If I forexample put the old one(that's working) with a new one in, it only detects the old one, and shows the RAID as having been "broken"...

I've tried removing the RAID, while 2 old disks were in the laptop, and putting in new ones, same result :(

Hmm... I feel lost :(

Do you know of any HDDs that you know works with the laptop :) ?
