v2010 CPU upgrade problem .....

Postby Ashrich » Wed Nov 22, 2006 7:48 pm

Hello everyone , first post here . I have just got an Intel 735a SL8BA 1.7ghz processor to drop into my v2010 which is currently running a Celeron 1.5ghz .

So , I did the usual stuff to reach the proc , having already upgraded the memory , carefully undid the 4 screws in the heatsink , folded back the fan and removed the hsf assembly . I then removed the celeron and replaced it with the Pentium M , so far so good . I cleaned off the bottom of the heatsink and applied a small amount of Arctic Silver Ceramique and replaced the assembly and gently screwed it back down again . I then replaced everything else and put the battery back in and that is when the fun started .

The laptop will post and the processor is recognised , it will run in safe mode and show in Device Manager , with the fan is running all the time , but it will not boot to Windows XP home , it reaches the bit with the little green lights running from left to right then freezes !

Anyone got any idea what I'm missing out from doing ? Does the pm800 Via chipset not support 90nm , 2mb cache processors ? When I replaced the Celeron M all ran fine .

As you have the experience of upgrading the Ram, Can you please advise me how to get to the ram of my V2010 laptop. How does one remove the keyboard?
Thank you

Hello Paul , well , first of all , remove the battery , just to prevent accidents , then , looking at the top of the base of the laptop you can see that the surround that houses the on/off button and those for the wireless network etc. is separate from the rest of the base . Slide a thin stiff blade or something similar ( I use a nail file ) between the top of the keyboard and the surround between f2 and f3 and lever gently until you feel it give , then the same between f11 and f12 , it should have released from the small fixings , then you can gently release the rest , there is a screw at the top of the keyboard ( just one ) that holds it to the base , remove it and lift the board and turn it slowly anti-clockwise , making sure not to stress the connectors . Then the cover needs to be removed , making sure you remember to replace all the screws in EXACTLY the holes they came from , that it important . Remove the screws holding the metal plate and lift it clear and underneath is the mini pci wireless card and the two memory slots , reassemble in reverse order !!

Thank you very much Ashley. I have followed your clear instructions and managed to get to the Ram. Thank you very much. It was easy and I do not see why some people stress the need for a fully qualified engineer is required for such a simple procedure. It is like asking s specialist to peform a nurse's task. Thanks

If you follow the directions for the ram replacement as I outlined above you will also see the CPU and heatsink assembly . The fan will just move aside as the screw holding it in place will have been removed in accessing the memory . Unscrew the four screws holding the heatsink in place and lift away . At the side of the CPU holder is a slot for a flat point screwdriver , this with a quarter turn will unlock the holding mechanism and the CPU can be carefully lifted from the socket . Put a little fresh heat compound ( I favour Arctic Silver ) on the top of the CPU , gently lower it into the holder and turn the screw again to lock in place , replace the four screws you removed that hold the heatsink in place and then reassemble in reverse as for the memory .

I mean the socket the CPU sits in ( socket 479 ) there is a screw to be quarter turned on the left after the fan and heatsink have been moved ( I think it is on the left ! )

Of course you could be one of the unlucky ones who have their CPU's soldered in .....
