Amilo Pi 1505 going into standby while in use

Postby eam9000 » Sun Dec 10, 2006 1:04 pm

My Amilo Pi 1505 keeps having bouts of going into standby mode while in use. It is running Windows XP Home SP2 as pre-installed, I have set all the Windows Power Options to "never" so nothing should ever shut down, hibernate or standby whatever is going on (or not going on).

When this happens there is not the usual initial Windows screen saying that Windows is preparing to go into standby or hibernate or anything else, it is immediate, the sound card clicks and the screen goes black and then the power light starts flashing. Hitting the power button brings it back.

This happens when the machine is actively in use and not sitting doing nothing and is very annoying.

Does anybody know a reason for this happening? I am reluctand to send the machine for warranty repair because it is very intermittent and I use it a lot.

Thanks for any comments,

Eric

That's very strange...
You are sure that you didn't touch the standby key in any way? ;-)

Maybe a virus?

Thanks for your reply Aaron, the only way I know to put it into standby on purpose is using the Function key + F1 or via the start menu and this give a Windows screen showing the hibernate, stand by, turn off and restart buttons. This does not happen when the problem occurs it just goes straight into standby - or suspend (I have to hit the power button to bring it back which I think happens in suspend though I am not sure of the difference otherwise).

It has been doing this from new before it was ever connected to the net and it has been scanned for viruses and spyware using several up to date scanners! If there is a key I could be hitting please tell me what it might be. I cannot find reference to one key that will do this - but I never was any good at reading manuals. :)

Thanks,

Eric

Fn+F1 it is then - there aren't more than one afaik ;-)

Can you do a "hardware reset" as described in the FAQ? Maybe it helps. Do you have the newest BIOS version?

I have updated the BIOS but was not aware of a "hardware reset" procedure. I have now done this and will see how it goes. It might take a few weeks to be sure of any result, it is an intermittent problem that tends to happen several times in a few days and then disappear for a time.

Thanks again,

Eric

Unsolicited standby

I am having exactly the same problem with my Amilo - it will enter standby/hibernate on its own. All power options set to never, but makes no difference. Anybody able to help? The machine is brand new. Thanks

Well I did a BIOS update and a hardware reset as previously mentioned and it seems to have cured the problem. Though I am not yet totally convinced, a bit more time and I will be. If you try this please do let me know the results.

Thanks Eric - I will probably try that - however, I am a bit reluctant to upgrade the BIOS on a brand new machine until I have spoken directly with fujitsu - technically it is under warranty and it shouldn't need this sort of upgrade. I will post my progress.....!

Flashing the BIOS did not appear to do anything though later carrying out the hardware reset does seem to have fixed it. I do not know if it was the two together or just the hardware reset. The problem now is that the screen seems to be turning off on occasion by itself, but I am not the actual user now and have not been able to see it happen so it could be user induced.

I wonder if ukbob has had any success?

Thank you for replying.

Well, i flashed the latest bios. Worked for 1 day, then the problem resumed. Then, I flashed an older bios, the one I presumed you used at the time you had the problem. That was yesterday, it's been working fine so far.

I'll try to do a hardware reset (it can't hurt i suppose...). So, all i have to do is remove the battery and the AC-cord, then hold the power button for 15 seconds ? Will i get any kind of signal (auditory or visual) to release the button, meaning the reset has been succesfull ?

Thanks.

Yes.

No, there's no power left to give you any feedback ;-)
That's the idea of the "hardware reset" (don't know who invented that name, it's a bit confusing):
Remove all power and press the power key to use up remaining energy in capacitors etc. So you can be sure that there's absolutely nothing interfering in RAM or anywhere else.

Well, i did the bios update and the hard-reset, but it still did not resolve the issue. The only thing i haven't tried is reinstalling the operating sistem (winxp home).

But... i have only recently noticed the small rubber button located right above the power on/off switch. It seems to be responsable for the notebook entering stand-by whenever the screen is closed (the button being automatically pressed). Well, i noticed that is extremely sensitive. It triggers stand-by mode at the slightest contact with the finger.

I think it may actually have something to do with my problem.

Has anybody made any progress in diagnosing the stand-by issue ?

That's interesting, at some point I did actually set it to do nothing when the lid is closed (in Windows control panel, power options, the advanced tab). It has been left that way and that could well have been what stopped the problem. I didn't really appreciate that it could be that sensitive and perhaps missed the obvious.
