Strange noise from hard drive

Postby my_fsc_v2030 » Sat Dec 23, 2006 1:59 pm

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I wasn't sure where to put it.

I have an Amilo Pro v2030. I recovered it with the CD and installed the drivers with the DVD.
When I turn it on, the bios screen flicks on as normal and then as the Windows XP loading screen fades in, it freezes mid-fade. Then after about ten seconds, the hard drive light flickers, the drive spins up and windows loads. Then on shut down, the windows is shutting down screen comes on then when it turns off, the drive makes the high pitched noise like when it is forced to turn off by holding down the power button.
The drive is also detected by windows as a SCSI drive, (shown below) even though in the bios it is said to be on SATA channel 1. One of the drive options is 32-bit I/O, and this is disabled. Could this be the problem, as it only seems as if the drive cannot power on and off properly. Any ideas as to the cause? As I am worried about damaging the drive. Was I supposed to install any drivers during Windows setup? I found some floppy images on the driver DVD, but I don't have a floppy drive.
Sorry if this is an obvious problem.

SATA drives are shown as SCSI, that's ok. You used the recovery CD, so those floppy drivers weren't required (because they are on the CD itself).

In every case you should backup your data.
You could try a diagnostic tool for your harddisk (but is is possible that it won't recognize the SATA controller).

OK thanks. :) I backed up all my data before I reformatted, so I'm OK with that. I'll try a diagnostic on the disk, but i just find it strange that it worked before the recovery. I also posted it on the fujitsu forum where someone else had an identical problem, but I got no response there. I'll go and try a diagnostic now.
Also, the touch pad doesn't have any drivers installed. There are three on the DVD, which one do I use? Is it the one from Alps (I think that's what it was called) because I seem to remember reading that on the fujitsu website.

Thanks again.

Done

I've run two different diagnostic tools on the disk and both say it's fine. I've now also noticed that with the high pitched whining noise, there is also a click that sounds like the dvd drive laser returning to it's postion. So could this be the notebook not powering down properly? Or is it just the hard drive heads returning?
It just seems strange that this happened after reinstalling windows.
Thanks again.

OK I'm going to try installing Linux now. Ubuntu 6.06, see if it makes any difference.

Merry Christmas

Ubuntu shuts down fine with no noises that shouldn't happen. I need to use Windows more than Linux and am concerned if this will cause any damage. I can upload a video of it happening if it helps. Is there any other way to restore it back to the way it was from the factory?
Thanks again.

Here's a video of the problem if it helps. Does anyone know if there's anywhere else I can ask for help?
You need to turn the volume up to hear the noise at the end of the video.
