HDD problem after recovery disk used amilo pro v2030

Postby celeron » Sat Dec 30, 2006 9:29 am

Have seen this problem listed in a few forums , but since using recovery disk on my laptop , now i have same problem.
On startup , computer hangs for about 10 seconds on the xp splash screen , then starts as normal and works fine.
On shutdown , hard drive makes strange noise then clicks as laptop powers off . (same noise as if forcing power off by holdind power button in)
Have contacted fujitsu on a number of occasions , but all they say is `well its working ok isnt it , it dosent sound like hardware failure `.
Have tried re-installing with retail version of xp home and this cured the problem - BUT - in device manager hdd was picked up as ide and not sata/scsi . bizarre.
anyone got any ideas .
Thanks,

Mark

As you've probably seen I have same problem. I think I have found the device at fault, but don't know the cure, sorry. In Device Manager under the IDE/ATAPI controller section there should be 2: VIA Bus Master IDE and Secondary channel. If I uninstall the driver for the VIA Bus Master IDE entry and then reboot, Windows loads perfectly. However, it then loads and installs the drivers automatically, so I can't confirm if this solves the shutdown noise.
EDIT: Sorry for asking, are you from the fujitsu forums with the same problem? :)

OK i've now found out that the SMART diagnostics for the HDD can not be seen from windows when they could before the reformat. If I use the UBCD4Win cd and boot from that, then the diagnostic tools can read the SMART values. From within Windows however, I can monitor the drives temperature and see its serial number, but there are no smart values. Some programs give an error, and some just have no smart values listed and just zeros instead. Also, I used a friends brand new (well, never been reformatted) v2030 the other day and his hard disc is not listed as a SCSI drive. :? Anyone got any new ideas?
