amilo si 1520 standby problem

Postby erik_a » Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:06 am

Hi,

If I leave my si 1520 on for several hours (like overnight) it goes into some strange standby mode, which is impossible to wake up without reseting the computer. The computer seems to be on, but the screen is off and the only way to get the laptop to react is to hold down the power button until it shuts down.

In the energy settings, everything is set to "Never" except shutting down of the screen after 30 minutes idle time. There is no problem waking up the computer with the screen shut off after a few hours, the problem only seems to arise after many hours of idle time and is thus very difficult to troubleshoot.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Erik

I suppose this strange standby is the Suspend to disk mode.

Are you using Windows or Linux?

On my si 1520, both suspend to disk and suspend to RAM works fine within windows and linux.

Ok, lets assume that the suspend to disk is causing those problems (I think it is called "hibernate" within Windows).
Do you have enough disk space left (i.e., more than your RAM)?

That's what I thought at first too, but it appears as if the computer is running and not suspended. However, the screen is turned off and I don't get any response pressing keys, so it's as if it's stuck in some intermediate state. And I've set the Energy parameters to NOT allow any automatic suspension, except for turning off the screen after 30 mins. Which works fine if I leave the computer for a few hours.

Sorry for not mentioning this in the previous post. I'm running Windows XP Home, SP2.

Seemingly, this works fine for me also, when I choose to suspend myself. The problem arises when I leave the laptop for several hours, like overnight.

Yes, I have ample disk space.

Maybe this isn't an Amilo issue, but a Windows issue?

Did you try this:
Configure Windows to go into standby after e.g. 1 hour - does it work then (in the morning)?

Can you hear the harddrive when the laptop does not respond?

Good idea, I'll play around with different configurations to see if I can invoke the problem in a bit easier/faster way than just leaving the laptop alone for many hours...

Hmm, not sure... I guess I'll have to do some more testing and try to observe exactly what seems to be on and off. I'll get back when I've checked this out some more. It's not like it's a big problem, but it really annoys me.

Thanks,
Erik

Ok, it happened again overnight (~ six hours) and it seems like the computer gets suspended to RAM - the computer is obviously on, but there is no sound from the hard drive as far as I can tell.

The difference in behavior from "suspend to RAM" is that the power light is on instead of blinking, and that nothing happens when I press the power button.

I still haven't tried configuring the computer to suspend after 1 hour, that will be my next test.

The last two postings (13th March) on the thread linked to above might answer the problem - a very sensitive lid switch. Whatever, mine is now OK.

Thanks for the info. I'm still waiting for my SI1520, but it's nice to be ahead of problems (which I hope I won't encounter, anyway! :) )
