Linux on Amilo Xa 1526  Topic is solved

Postby malkovich » Thu Feb 15, 2007 12:31 am

Hi all,

Has anybody tried succesfully some Linux distribution on model Amilo Xa 1526?
It has an AMD proccesor and so far (I got it a few days ago) the only Linux live CD offering good results is Ubuntu 6.10: everything OK but the WiFi card which I think isn´t supported yet under Linux...

I would like to use Knoppix or Mandriva but I´ve read there are some problems still with this model.

Thanks.

WLAN should work with ndiswrapper, of course a native kernel module would be nice.

What problems are there with Knoppix/Mandriva?

Thanks for your reply!

I meant I couldn´t find a Linux NATIVE driver for the wifi card; The card should work using ndiswrapper, but as there aren´t native linux drivers so far it can´t be used in monitor mode...

With Knoppix I tried a live CD and got a problem with the graphic card so I couldn´t start x-windows and had to use command mode....

With Mandriva I had the same problem but I used a very old distibution so probably it would go OK with a recent one....

I will try on, this is a very recent Amilo model so I suppose I must be patient...:-)

Regards.

Getting better

Postby Svima » Thu Mar 08, 2007 7:09 am

Have tried Mandriva 2007, OpenSuse and Sabayon on my xa 1526.
Using OpenSuse 10.2 (just upgraded to kernel 2.6.20) for the moment as I think suse works best all in all, but all these distros work ok. The important thing is kernel, and the support is better in the later ones. Had issues with acpi, sound, etc with some versions of 2.6.18 (alsa, powernow,etc) when I got the xa in december, but now those are working great. Some trouble with xorg (I think) and the 1440x900 res witch is very buggy at times, hope this will be fixed, or maybe it is...I guess I'll find out when I start installing Nvidias drivers again..Search forums for various fixes if problem. No wifi, but a cheap usb-dongle may do the trick until its supported. Don't care much for wrapping win drivers, but it works for others I've heard. No luck with the remote control so far. Bluetooth working well both phones and other pc's (out of the box in fact), no problems with dvd or ipods of various types. Mem cards for mobile phones and cameras works out of the box (hole in front). Using 64-bits by the way. Quite happy with it now, great sound!

Thanks for your help,

I have now a better idea about what I can expect to work fine under Linux and what isn´t supported so far....I think I´ll try first with Mandriva because I had a good experience with previous versions of this distribution.
I planned to use an usb-dongle wifi card until the one included has native support, but I hope this will happen soon...

Georgeous machine! I bought it after a long search comparing features and price and so far I´m very pleased.

Hi.

I had similar problems with linux, tried opensuse 10.2, ubuntu 7.04, FC 6 and 7, slackware and Sabayon and not one of them gave me sound in speakers only in headphones with bios v. 1.1E. Flashed bios with v 1.0B and sound worked fine.

Regarding modem you could try http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/ The modem on xa1526 is a Conexant modem and this site claims to install the conexant drivers easy and automatic :) Haven't tried it since i dont need modem.

Fn+ sound and brightnes worked fine in ubuntu 6.10 with old bios but not in 7.04 and suse 10.2 . So it works somehow but I didn't do anything about it since i couldnt get sound to work proberly. Running windows again :(

Would be nice if someone got sound to work fine with latest bios tho. Other then that everything worked fine except native drivers for wireless. Used ndiswrapper and that was stable. No problems at all. I would go for suse, FC6/7 or Sabayon on this laptop not Ubuntu since ubuntu freeze the system from time to time. Didnt have that problem in the other distro's.

Sound is ON!!

Postby Hook » Mon Jun 11, 2007 12:21 pm

1. I solves sound! Just set parameter for snd_hda_intel as module=3stack_dig(it`s can be made from YAST sound config)
2. New problem - one fan always works :( In Win all is fine
3. I tried drivers from http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/, but they dont`t work for me - driver module cant load into kernel :? May be i have to wait a new version.....

1. Do you have a screenshot on how to set the sound parameter i Yast?? Can't get it to work.

2. My fans runs fine. Shuts down on low load and run on heavy load. Default install - zenworks and apparmor + laptoptools + update. No problems.

3. I also tried the conexant drivers from this site and it hangs my system at boot. Loaded ok on install tho. Don't know if its the correct driver for this modem or maybe missing some firmware to make it work properly.

Sorry, parameter name is "model"

New problem - all suse kernels >2.6.20 hang up on "NET Registered Protocol Family 2".

no no non...french found solution....!!

http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=142019&p=2

or in french too :

x64

for i386 :

I installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my Amilo Xa 1526 (because Vista is realy fukin shit :evil: unable to copy files greater than somes megabytes via network without crashing like a bloody f***in #4é'!'ér 23éfkjbé'àçéd"é dam*#~"' shit :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:).

hmm... sorry :D

So:
No installation problem
* LAN works autodetected
* Bluetooth seems detected well but not realy tested.
* WLAN have to use NDISWrapper + WinXPMediaCenter drivers from siemens website, then it works well.
* USB printer HP 450 deskjet works autodetected
* Graphic Card OK (nvidia drivers updated automaticaly on first boot)
=> NVidia settings manager tool MANUALY installed (via Synaptic), works well.
* Hotkeys (Video, Mail, Browser, Power) seems to works well.
=> Fan hotkey not realy tested as I don't realy know what it's expected to do (someone knows ?)
* Fn+F1 : Hibernation OK
* Fn+F6 : Mute OK
* Fn+F10/F11 : Vol +/- OK
* Fn+F3 : Monitor swithing NOT TESTED yet

But
* Fn+F5 : Touchpad enable/disable: Doesn't seems to work, but not realy usefull.
* Fn+F8/F9 : LCD Brightness -/+ DOESNT WORK, and that's a problem because LCD is locked with low bright, even if we can play with Video Card setting, the LCD screen doesn't give the max brightness he can.
I heard you said it works with old Ubuntu/Bios settings ? Can you give more info please ? Anyone has a solution for this ?

* Firewire NOT TESTED
* Modem NOT TESTED (I do not use it, as I use lan to connect to internet)
* S/Video NOT TESTED yet

===

Anyone has more info about LCD Brightness trouble ? How can I make it work ? Any tips ?
