Vista and fan speed

Postby snq » Tue Feb 20, 2007 1:11 pm

I installed Vista on my M4438G yesterday, and ever since then my fan has been driving me insane. My notebook is noisy as hell and I can't find any way to reduce the noise from the fan. Even if I disable all graphic effects, use the fan button thingy, and don't touch the thing for a couple of minutes, the fan still doesn't stop.

So does anyone know of a way to make it stop? Because I can't stand this. Under XP it would be quiet most of the time, unless I actually did something. If there is no way around this I'm going to have to switch back to XP :(

Edit: I should add, CPU usage is not abnormal, it's usually below 5%.

That's a known problem, happens with other operating systems than XP :-(

I figured :(

Apparently Speedstep is broken on a lot of different laptops from different manufacturers and a BIOS update is needed to make it work again?
I guess we're pretty much screwed then, I don't really see FSC coming with a fix, the latest BIOS for the x438 being over a year old and all :(

Afaik Speedstep works. You can reproduce this fan problem in XP if you use the wrong graphics driver (without a specific registry value). In Vista this registry fix doesn't work. In Linux the same problem.

I hope FSC will provide a BIOS update or Vista graphics driver. The more people asking, the better chances are ;-)

You can use new drivers from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com
Works for me, my fan behaves normally in Vista.

That unfortunately didn't work, it's still going at max :(

Exactly which drivers are you using?
I'm using the 100.65 available from http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_100.65.html as of today, with the modded inf from laptopvideo2go.

Or maybe I need to change some settings somewhere as well?

I haven't changed any settings, currently using 100.64 and the fan is spinning up and down depending on load. However, I don't think it ever goes down to the bare minimum anymore.

I see that FSC now lists Vista as supported for M3438G: http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/support/downloads.html (but almost no drivers yet)
New hope for a solution of the fan problem :-)

Somebody can try it?

Sorry I can't test it, I already removed Vista. I'm using my laptop 8 hours a day or more for work and I just couldn't stand the noise.

I have to say I'm a bit amazed by the fact that FSC actually seems to support Vista tho, not bad at all :)

Some users says that problem could be a wrong power management of Pentium M...
I am not at home at this moment but somebody could try this utility to override cpu speed setting and reduce fan speed:
