Pi 1505 overheating?

Postby Bulldozer » Thu Mar 08, 2007 4:16 am

Hi

I'm new around, and finally I found a FSC forum where i actually can post (at FSC forum, i can never get my new account approved...)

So, here's the problem.

I have this Amilo Pi1505 with Core2Duo T7200, and i'm pretty sure i'm having overheatting problems.

The fan turns on even if the notebook stays at idle (this happens at 65ºC). Even with the "Silent Mode" on, the fan comes on.

Running Intel TAT with full load at both cores, the processor reaches 85ºC (with room temperature below 20ºC) which, in turn, sometimes make the CPU throttle back the frequency to keep the temperature at safe levels.

I returned the notebook to FSC and they replaced CPU...when I picked it up, it was worse than before: the before mentioned burn test would fire up the temperatures even quicker than before...

I returned it a second time and now they say they have replaced motherboard, cpu, heatsink, memory, etc...everything except the case and LCD...it's better now: i can notice the temperatures will raise slower but, eventually, it reaches the same values (85/86ºC) during the intel TAT burn test...besides, the fan keeps coming on more often than what i think it is supposed to. I'm sure I will have problems during Summer...I don't think this behavior is normal considering the ambient temperatures at this time...

Is there anyone here with a similar setup (pi1505 with core2duo T7200) that could help me with this one? Could anyone try to run Intel TAT, full load both cores and tell me what happens?

Btw, where can I find service manual for this notebook? I was thinking on replace the thermal compound with some artic silver grease, but I don't want to adventure myself in unknown lands...mainly because the notebook is still under warranty.

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Regards

Fan runs all the time or is it turned off after some time (when cpu is idle)?
XP or Vista? Does the cpu clock down to 1000 MHz?

I found these threads:
topic,243,-Amilo-P1-1505.html
topic,437,-Is-there-any-way-fan.html

I suppose it is normal that it gets hot, but of course it would be best if another user could do the burn-in test.

Aaron

As I've mentioned in another post:

I have the same problem with my Amilo Pi1505

Yesterday I decided to adventure myself and opened the laptop, removed the heatsink and put some Arctic Silver grease.

Unfortunately, I've not solved my problem, as it continues to reach 85ºC during the intel TAT burn-in test...

The Core2Duo T7200 is the "top" processor for the Pi1505, but FSC should have been careful to use an adequate heatsink for this CPU.

Yesterday I tested a Lenovo T60 with this same processor (C2D T7200) and the maximum temperature the cores reached was 81ºC (in my case, cores reach 87/89ºC with the same test). The huge difference is that this Lenovo's fan is way more quiet than Amilo's one, which insists on turning on whenever temperature crosses 65ºC...

On the other hand, the lastest BIOS available for Pi1505 has included support for the following processors:

Additional information:
- The µ- code and support for the following processors has been added:
- Intel Core Duo T2350
- Intel Core 2 Duo T5300/ T5500/ T5600

Now I wonder...where the hell is T7200?

PS: I apologize for this verbal "relief"...but I'm quite disappointed with my laptop... :(

Fan does not run all the time...the problem is that even at idle (1000MHz), or running tasks like Word or browsing on the web, the fan kicks in quite frequently...and it is damn noisy!!

But as I stated on the previous post, I've come to the conclusion that this is a poor design issue...this laptop should have never been sold with this C2D T7200 processor...its thermal specification is way above the cooling capabilities of the heatsink...

Maybe one of these days I call FSC Germany directly and expose my situation...
