ok, it seems to be there is a problem with the driver. Are you sure you are using the right one? Try the drivers that you can find on the FSC website first. If they work, you can still try to update the drivers.
Also do not forget BIOS and hardware reset. Many weird problems where solved with these resets.

Yeah, i'm using the drivers from the FSC website.
I updated the bios last week, and yesterday i performed "load optimal defaults" and saved in the bios. Is that what you mean with a bios "reset"?
I'm reinstalling XP from scratch now
-after that i'm gonna update to SP2.
-then running the KB888111
-then trying to install the modem drivers from fsc (i'll try the "add new hardware" with "have disk" option)
-after that i'll install the audio drivers.

Hope this sequence is ok, or doesn't the order matter (the problem must be somewhere...)?

when I installed XP on my old machine, I did it like this:

- install XP with integrated SP2 - OR - install XP and the very first thing you do is to install SP2!
- install chipset drivers (Intel)
- install SATA drivers (Matrix Storage manager or, in this case, VIA RAID controller drivers)
(up to now, sound and modem hardware is not revealed in the device manager)
- install KB888111 (now(!) the device manager should show modem and sound card!)
- install Realtek and modem drivers (the order didn't matter)
- install rest (video, ....)

Later on I have also used an XP CD with integrated SP2 and KB888111. Worked fine as well!

An XP CD with integrated SP3 should do the same thing such as you would have SP2 AND KB888111 already integrated. This means, you should see the audio and modem hardware in the device manager right after the installation of XP. In this case, do Chipset, SATA, Audio, Modem, ....

We call "BIOS reset" to load setup defaults. (Also non-visible settings are adapted.
We call "hardware reset" when you remove batteries AND power plug, and press the power switch for several seconds afterwards. Then you can plug in the power cord again.

Regards
Borkar

EDIT: Remark: As far as I remember, the windows CD shipped with your FSC latop had already included the KB888111. You can check that simply by looking at the device manager. If there are already entries (yellow) pointing to modem and audio hardware, the KB888111 is already installed. Else, the computer would not recognize the hardware connected via the HD audio bus (namely, the sound card and the modem) at all!

Borkar,

thanks for the help.
-reinstalled xp with the sequence you said. No sound yet. But I can't get the modem installed: when i add the "motorola SM56 data fax modem" (add hardware wizard) it asks me on what ports i want to install the driver. Since i have no ports, i cannot continue. Also tried other drivers for motorola sm56, no help. Sorry for all the questions, but is this really this device that is present in the m3438g?

I think there where two different modems that were built into the M3438. Both drivers should be online on FSC's website.

Ok,

I finally got rid of the unknow modem device. It seemed to be a "Smart Link 56K Voice Modem". If anyone else needs the drivers, i got them here: http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/SmartLink-90-92-Internal-Modem-Driver-42001-Download-18211.html

However, still no sound  . Can anyone help me with a restore disk (image file) or a backup of all the drivers of an m3438g laptop? It's driving me mad...
I've tried like everything now, don't know what else I could do.

are you using the XP CD of FSC?

Have you tried using the Drivers & Utilities-DVD with its automatic update functionality?

I'm using an Nlite cd which i made from the original windows xp cd. With nlite, i included the raid drivers.

Problem is that i lost the recovery cd.
Still have recovery cd's of esprimo (fs) computers, also some servers, etc, but these won't work i assume?

hm... in fact, I have never had such problems with my M3438. Maybe the hardware is broken?... Sorry.

don't think it's broken. Just installed SP3 on fresh xp, and after that the correct modem, and then the realtek audio drivers. Directly after this, i have audio on everything.... until i reboot.
I think perhaps after the reboot, the drivers selects the wrong speakers (or output, whatever) ? Anyone have any experience with that?
Thanks...

ah, ok.

So let me list what I can think of:

services.msc : Windows Audio must be autimatic and running
Volume must be ok. Not muted (well... just for completeness ;) )
In the Control Panel - Audio Settings you should try to check "output devices" etc. Also make sure there is nothing muted, etc.
Realtek should have installed an own software. Check all settings (disable SPDIF) and try the sound check there.
Have a look whether anything yellow appeared in the device manager after the reboot.
Try to plug in ear phones and check sound of them. Do they work?
Make sure the external volume control (this little wheel on the chassis) is not on silent.

Maybe I said something that stupid that it helped ;)

Good luck.

Well,
it seems I found a way to make it work...

That is what worked for me (in this order):
-fresh xp installation
-(lan drivers)
-SP3
-modem drivers (smart link)
-intel chipset drivers
-realtek hd audio drivers (the older ones, from the FS site)

When it worked, I retried the whole process, and it works.
Borkar, thanks for the help!! The hint about the sound wheel (left) was a good hint, maybe in some cases, it was turned too silent too....
Or maybe something went wrong while running the KB888111 - which i didn't need anymore since it is in sp3 -
Anyway, I'm glad it works now, this took me a lot of time!
Hopefully this can help other people if they have a similar problem...
