OpenSUSE Live DVD Problem

Postby Sciamano » Fri Apr 06, 2007 6:59 pm

Hi!
I was trying to run the LiveDVD of OpenSUSE 10.2, but after I choose "Live DVD - Gnome" (or even KDE) it goes into kernel panic after an error that says:

"Cannot find the CD I was booted from - doh!"

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Which laptop model?
Have a look at topic,475,-Open-Suse-10-2-doesn-t-install-on-Amilo-L7300-Bios-1-0G.html

Sorry, I forgot to mention. My laptop is an Amilo SI1520, the latest model with Intel C2D T7200 @ 2GHz.
My problem is that I can't run the LiveDVD, while the problem in the topic you linked is installation. I guess it's two differents issues.
Thanks anyway.

Maybe, but not necessarily. It is the same kernel - and it is probably a kernel problem.

BIOS update available? Maybe you have to reload BIOS defaults, sometimes this solves some issues with Linux...

Then there are always other distributions you could try...

Yes, I have already installed Ubuntu Feisty (7.04 beta), but there are a few issues with the 4-in-1 card reader and the Synaptics touchpad. That's why I wanted to try OpenSUSE...
I'll try to fiddle with the BIOS options and/or to update it, in case a new version is out. Thanks for the suggestions.

Ok, I managed to make it start by enabling 32-bit support for the CD drive.

Now on with the problems in the live:
1) the touchpad won't scroll when touching its rightmost part
2) resolution stuck at 1024x768 even though the system panel correctly recognizes that maximum resolution is 1280x800
3) no wireless :(

Any suggestions?
I don't want to install it on the HD unless I'm sure those things will actually work.

Thanks

The Linux synaptics driver supports almost everything, better than the Windows one imho ;-)

915resolution might do the trick.

OpenSUSE doesn't provide them? I think they do...

Or is it only the wireless kill switch?

Still, I tried to fiddle a little with the mouse config but obtained nothing. :(

Oh, ok... I thought it would install it by default.

I don't know... In the Hardware Information panel, it seems that the card is correctly recognized, but I couldn't find how to activate it. Pressing Fn+F1 or Fn+F3 did not work. This also made me realize that most of the "Fn+Fx" buttons don't work (but this was stated in another topic of the forum too).

Last but not least: I tried to suspend, but the systems "prepares" for it, but then the display goes blank and everything turns back on (as if it made a suspend and an automatic resume). Is this normal behavior with the Live version?

Thanks for your help.

Synaptics configuration: There is a GUI tool, but I used xorg.conf to do it:
Code: Select all
Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier  "Synaptics Touchpad"
    Driver      "synaptics"
    Option      "SendCoreEvents"    "true"
    Option      "Device"            "/dev/psaux"
    Option      "Protocol"          "auto-dev"
    Option      "HorizScrollDelta"  "0"
    Option      "LeftEdge"          "1300"
    Option      "RightEdge"         "5200"
    Option      "TopEdge"           "1600"
    Option      "BottomEdge"        "4400"
    Option      "FingerHigh"        "25"
    Option      "FingerLow"         "22"
    Option      "MaxTapTime"        "180"
    Option      "MaxTapMove"        "220"
    Option      "MaxDoubleTapTime"  "180"
    Option      "MinSpeed"          "0.08"
    Option      "MaxSpeed"          "0.14"
    Option      "AccelFactor"       "0.0006"
    Option      "VertScrollDelta"   "100"
    Option      "HorizScrollDelta"  "0"
    Option      "EmulateMidButtonTime"  "0"
    Option      "LockedDrags"       "false"
    Option      "RTCornerButton"    "0"
    Option      "RBCornerButton"    "0"
    Option      "LTCornerButton"    "0"
    Option      "LBCornerButton"    "0"
    Option      "TapButton1"        "1"
    Option      "TapButton2"        "2"
    Option      "TapButton3"        "3"
    Option      "SHMConfig"         "true"
EndSection

(Just as an example, optimal values depend on the model and yourself...)

Activating WLAN:
Ok, then it is the kill switch probably. Many laptops require tools for that to work.
But to make sure:
Code: Select all
dmesg | grep ipw3945

Is there a message "ipw3945: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On"?

Suspend:
That's a problem for almost everyone ;-)
I wouldn't try that with a Live CD.

Thanks, I'm now downloading the Installation DVD, so that I can sacrifice my Ubuntu installation and try OpenSUSE. I can always go back to Ubuntu later, if something with OpenSUSE goes wrong (or I don't like it).
I guess I'll have to learn new commands (for example, I've tried "lspci" to see what hardware OpenSUSE recognized but received a "unknown command" message...) :)

I'll keep you posted, and be back for more help. :)
