si1520 very strange xp install/session id missing error

Postby carlywalker » Sat Apr 07, 2007 12:29 pm

Hi all... I think this is a very funny problem

I have an Amilo si1520 with vista pre installed. I recently installed XP PRO and finally managed to get sound, graphics, wlan etc working (phew - finally used nlite to slimstream SP2 and SATA drivers to installation CD) but now I have a very strange problem...

When trying to login to certain web based services (mysql db admin) I get a session id missing error message (as I understand it session IDs are set server side not client side) and I am not allowed to login. This error message is generated by the website but it is not their site at fault.
I have tried logging in on multiple other computers and it works fine, I have also restored my Amilo (so it runs vista) and it works fine.

This is not an internet explorer version or setting problem as I have installed ie6 and ie7 to no avail (yet both versions login fine on other computers) and been through the security/privacy settings with a fine tooth comb (although default settings work fine on all other computers). I also installed Opera - same problem!!!

Taking all of the above into account I can only imagine an OS installation problem (none reported during install) of a bizarre hardware conflict... Has anyone ever come across this before?

Session IDs are usually stored in a cookie - this forum uses them, too ;-) (with fallback to session ID in URL when disabled).
Recontrol your browser settings, session cookies have to be enabled.

Imho it is *very* unlikely to be a hardware problem, or even an OS issue - session IDs/cookies are not controlled by the OS in any way.
Any antivirus software installed?

I know how strange it sounds but I have check all of my IE settings and they are all correct (as I said I have other laptops setup without issue).

Add to that the fact that I seem to be able to login to ALL other sites that use cookies (to my knowledge) and I am very confused as to what is going on.

Regarding AV software, I am running Computer Associates Inoculate IT which is the same AV software I am running successfully on other machines.

I really think there is a *bigger* problem here

Did you delete old cookies for these domains? Maybe an old cookie is the problem (especially phpMyAdmin has changed its cookie format somewhen afaik).
(Does Opera import cookies from IE... I don't know.)

I have deleted all cookies/TIF multiple times. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled IE6 & 7 multiple times. I did not tell Opera to import anything...it gets weirder... as a last ditch attempt to access my databases I installed firefox and it works (as I said, I have already installed Opera and it did NOT work)... so it obviously is an IE/Opera issue but what? I have really been through EVERY setting a 100 times... i really think it is something to do with the OS install with Nlite.... ho hum... gone a bit off topic i suppose...
