Postby pipposanta » Sun Apr 30, 2006 6:36 pm

Hi,
anyone tried to install Windows Media Center Edition on an Amilo m3438g with XP Home pre-installed? How does this works? Can I mantain the feature of the PowerCinema key?

Do you want to use MCE parallel to your existing Home installation?
Then you should create a drive D:, if it doesn't exist already. You can install MCE on D:, afterwards you should install Instant On in MCE on drive C: (=> same path as the installation of Instant On in XP Home).
InstantOn will change your master boot record, so your remote control works as before.
Because there are two Windows installations there will be shown a bootloader, so you can choose which one to start.

If you want to replace your existing XP Home with MCE:
That's easier, you just have to install MCE. There's no difference regarding drivers or Instant On.

Yes.

Exactly.

Your Instant On key has to load Instant On ;-), as it does now.
You can choose between XP Home and MCE with the automatically installed bootloader (integrated in Windows) - short after booting there will be a menu to choose the windows installation which should be loaded.

If I make 2 partitions the choice is between 2 operative systems and 2 quickstart systems?[/b]
Sorry, why in the boot.ini now I have only WinXP Home? Is the quickstart function integrated in the main system?
Do you use the dualboot or the single boot with media center and istant on? Do you know some people that have this solution?

Hi pipposanta,

Sorry but I don't understand your problem.
First: Yes, you can install MCE on the M3438G. If you have problems with detecting the HDs, have a look at
topic,26,-Installation-of-Windows-XP-Home-Pro-PE-FAQs.html

Second: You can install both. For that you can create 2 partitions and install XP and MCE on two different partitions, or you don't, which also works (but not recommended).
If you want to use InstantOn, install it with the Windows (or one of the Windows) that is on the C drive into the default folder.

That's it!
Don't care about the boot.ini and the boot manager. Windows sets up everything on its own automatically!

Absolutely right.

Windows will activate its own bootloader which lets you choose between Home and MCE. Instant On doesn't work after the installation of Windows - but when installing Instant On, it configures another bootloader, which then has a "higher priority" than the one of Windows. But how this works isn't overly important - as long as it does work ;-)

so we have two cases
1)winxp home and mce installed on a second partition
2)only mce

to make instant on work in the first case I have to:
1)create a second partition(d)
2)install mce in the second partition
3)install instant on in the first partition from mce

to make instant on work in the second case I have to
1)format all
2)install mce
3)install instant on

Are you sure that the key continues to work?

And if I will mount a second hard disk and set the 2 hd to raid will I encounter problems with instant on?

Have you installed it already? I was thinking about doing the same thing. How do you feel the MCE performs in comparison to XP Pro or Home edition? I heard somewhere it has slight improvements over Pro and Home, but I never checked it's veracity.

I suppose we could use the incorporated remote control to work with MCE normally right?

Cheers!
