NB - Laptop keeps powering down  Topic is solved

Postby smee » Tue May 22, 2007 11:53 am

Hello again,

I am back this time because my computer is not working as it should, and I do not have any more Ideas where the problem could be.

The problem started when I started getting blue screens and the computer would not boot. Safe mode, last working config, start normally did not work.

I have backed up all my data, tried to get to the repair console or do a repair install but I cannot get that far without the computer turning itself off.
CHKDSK done no Problems (Boot CD) Hirens boot CD..
Cmos Battery changed
Bios set to default settings
Ram chips taken out then tested on Laptop in turn

I then deleted all Partitions with (Boot CD) then created a primary partition, and tried then to do a fresh install but the computer still turns itself off after I accept the M$ terms and conditions.
The Laptop is running on Mains Power.

Can anyone help?

I bought the Laptop in April 2006 and have been very happy with the little work horse!! I am contemplating sending it in to be looked at but I need some expert advice so that I know that I have done everything I can before I do this.

Many thanks in advance

it pretty much sounds like you have done everything that you can do. Call FSC and ask them to repair.

Thank you for your reply

I will contact fsc after blowing out any dust with a special compressed air can.

It feels like a hardware thing, and even trying to do a new install results in a power down with no warning before I reach an options menu.

Could it be that my (BIOS or if I still have a boot record on my hard drive after deleting my partitions) has some sort of virus on it.

I had Panda Anti virus installed.

If this is no then I will have to contact FSC, the funny thing is that my boot CD seems to run fine.

Thnx...

I would like to reset my bios.

Does anyone know how find and use the CMOS RESET JUMPER on my V2020?

you can only use the "setup defaults" in bios.

Solved

Postby smee » Thu May 24, 2007 4:34 pm

I have solved the problem, last night I got an error while using some DOS Tools, I wanted to make sure there was no lurking virus.

The message was that the CPU temperature was 105 0C, and it powered down.

I then noticed then that the fan was not blowing out any air.
I bought a can of Compressed Air today and then stripped down the Fan + Heatsink.

I was so shocked to see a cushon of dust about 3mm thick blocking the fan outlet. I cleaned out all the dust and applied some more compound to the heatsink/Cpu.

I was then able to install a fresh OS!!

I wish to thank everybody for the help and guidance in solving this rather strange problem.

I hope that it helps someone in the future. :D
