New keyboard for Amilo xi1546 - remove the black surround?  Topic is solved

Postby davidholdgate » Fri May 25, 2007 1:34 pm

Hello all

I have had the W key come off my keyboard. FSC say this is physical damage not covered by my 3yr warranty, and I cannot buy a single W key.

So, it looks like I am going to have to put a new keyboard in.

FSC would love me to do a non-warranty repair. No chance.

I can buy a new keyboard, and from existing posts here it looks as if all should be straightforward (there is a screwhole on the underside of the chassis with 'kb' next to it).

My question is this: has anyone else done this for an xi1546 yet? The keyboard is embedded in a black plastic surround that covers the speakers and power/other buttons. Will I have to remove this black surround first?

Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions

I don't think so, but I never had a better look at a Xi 1546, so I could be wrong.
Did you replace it already?

I would be surprised if it was different than on a M3438. There you must simply remove a screw at the bottom labelled with 'KB' for Keyboard. Then you can pull it out carefully while poking the little clips at the edges of the keyboard with a screwdriver.

Thanks for the comments above.

I have ordered a new keyboard and will report back once surgery is complete...

Surgery complete

Mission accomplished.

There were 6 clips - 4 at the top/rear of the keyboard and one at each side. The old keyboard folded up towards the front of the notebook, with the thin ribbon cable connector connecting to a socket at the centre-right of the keyboard recess. The two grey fixings holding the old ribbon connector pushed back to release it. The process was reversed to add the new keyboard.

Total time: 10 minutes work.
Result: Happy.

I wouldn't have been confident enough to do this without the comments about keyboard replacement on this forum, so thanks all.
