CPU Upgrade For AMILO L1310G

Postby vividamit » Mon Jul 23, 2007 2:14 am

Hi Friends,

I have AMILO L1310G Notebook.

Its very slow, even slower than me.
Could you please tell me how to make it faster ?

Can I upgrade processor from Celeron to Core Dual without changing moterboard ?

If not what is the best processor I can fit in same slot which will be supported to current motherboard of my slow AMILO L1310G ?

I will be very greatfull...

Thanks
Amit

It supports the Celerons with Dothan core, so I think only Pentium M with Dothan core is supported... e.g. M725 and M735 have been reported to work.

How much RAM do you have? An upgrade to 1 GB would be nice, too ;-)

Slow L1310G

Postby GERMO » Sun Oct 28, 2007 10:30 am

Upgrade to 1GB of ram. Ensure you use two of the 512MB 333Mhz (PC2700) and CL2.5 SODIMM. Correct voltage (2.5V) is very important.

Here is some help:

I was a little bit frustrated about my rather slow laptop, an Amilo L1310g. After this upgrade I was so satisfied. It works perfectly! It's fast, reliable, silent and the battery life did not decrease significantly. That's why I would like to share my experiences in upgrading the Amilo L1310g the good way.

First the setup before upgrading:

Intel Celeron M 370 (1.5 Ghz)
512 mb PC2100 (2x 256 mb)
Seagate Momentus 4200.2 80gb

The first step in upgrading was the memory. I wanted 1 gb. In my country, the Netherlands, in my opinion the prices for these memory upgrades were too high compared to the value of my laptop. After a long search I took the risk of buying OEM (Samsung/Hynix) memory from Ebay. I bought from the shop 'fastflashstore' which has a very good reputation. Because the price was so low, I decided to upgrade to 2 gb (2x 1gb) directly. At that time, 4 months ago, the price for 2 gb was around $50 incl. shipping! Make sure you buy PC2700 memory since this is the fastest the motherboard can handle. PC3200 will work as well but I've read some stories that it could cause instability.

After the succeeded memory upgrade there was the CPU. Now I have to admit the Celeron M isn't that bad. In fact, the only difference between the Celeron M and the Pentium M is the L2 cache which is 1mb for the Celeron M and 2mb for the Pentium M. But I had the chance to buy a very cheap Pentium M 725 1.6 Ghz cpu from a dutch website so I took the chance to see the difference in performance (and if it would work at all). I can tell you, it worked perfectly. The performance boost was more or less the same as the memory upgrade, I think both give an average 15-20% performance upgrade. Another advantage of the Pentium M is the ability to underclock it to 600 mhz when working with programs that require less. That'll reduce energy consumption and the annoyance of a rotating fan.

This was not enough for me so I went back to ebay to look for a faster CPU. The CPUs that will work are the M 725 (1.6), 735 (1.7), 745 (1.8 ), 755 (2.0), 765 (2.1) mPGA. Looking at the prices I realised that a M 765, the fastest CPU available for the L1310g, is not worth the money. These trade for around $120 on ebay. Even the M 755 was too expensive in my opinion, around $80, so I had decided to go for the reasonably priced M 745. I've paid something like $45 incl. shipping charges to the Netherlands. And I can tell you, the CPU works just perfect. Compared to the M 725 it gives me another 10% increase in performance.

After these upgrades I was quite satisfied. But one thing was still annoying me, the slow harddisk. I thought that the upgrade from 4200 rpm to 5400 rpm would'n be worth the difference so I started looking at 2.5" ATA 7200 rpm drives with at least 100 gb capacity. I can tell you, they are rare. There are still some available but the price is often high. So I started an investigation on the internet and found this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=264209
This harddisk would beat any other 5200 rpm 2.5" ATA harddisk and even the 7200 rpm disks for such a low price! So I checked the prices on the web, drove to a cheap store and bought this fantastic 160gb harddrive for my laptop for only 50 euro! My HDtune results increased from max 24 mb/s to 65 mb/s! That's what I call an upgrade!

This last upgrade really completed my laptop. It's twice as fast is it was before the upgrades. The total price? A little bit more than a hundred euro's. I don't think you can buy another laptop for that ;)

So to summarize:

CPU
Intel Celeron M 370 -> Intel Pentium M 745 (1.8 Ghz) $45 = 30 eur

Memory
512 MB PC2100 (2x 256 mb) -> 2 gb PC2700 (2x 1gb) $55 = 35 eur

Harddisk
Seagate Momentus 4200.2 4200 rpm 80GB -> Samsung HM160HC 5200 RPM 160GB $70 = 50 eur?

Thank you for reading and good luck upgrading!

Lucas

ps: If you have any additions you would like to add in this upgrade manual, feel free to post them. And sorry for my English if you think it's bad, it's not my native language ;)

Please Help

I just received my new 2x1GB , but when i start my machine i receive nothing but a Black Screen . What can be done to prevent this , and start using my new RAM :(
I have tested the RAM and it works just fine when it is combined with one of the older memory (256) , i tried every possible combination but it won't work.
Only once when i used 2x1GB it started working but after a few seconds the screen went black again. Another time it started and loaded the desktop (extremely slow) and after that i received a blue screen saying something about critical error, memory something ..... i am sure that you have seen it before :x

What can be done :?:

My laptop is L1310G OS XP Home Edition , SP3, 1,61 Intel(R) Celeron(R) M , 2x256 RAM. I know that my BIOS is Phoenix Technologies FirstBios Notebook Pro C2, but i don't know which version( i guess it's old but i don't know how to update, and where to find a newer version :?: .)

Please if you know how to deal with this problem give a suggestion :(

Hi there, i have l1310g too, but i did'nt try to upgrade ram.
1. The problem can be that your ram is incompatible with your pc. Look up, there man upgraded his pc with PC2700 (PC3200 also can be). So what is your ram?
2. Maybe your bios is old, you can see the version by perssing f2 after restart while bios loading. And if it is old :), you can update it from this site:
http://support.ts.fujitsu.com/com/suppo ... loads.html
In SELECT PROCUCT menu select Notebooks, then AMILO, then AMILO L/EL, then Amilo L1310G :) And it gives you all drivers for XP and BIOS updates too.

Hope it helps
Good Luck

Hi Gezasore
Thank you for the advices.
1. The ram is supposed to be compatible with my pc. It is 2x1GB TRUMP PC2700 DDR 333MHz SODIUM CL2.5
2.I used the page you gave me and updated the bios successfully to version 1.0F (the previous was 1.0A) and now it is a little bit better.

Now it works perfectly fine with 1GB + 256MB. But the problem is still there. When i install 2GB it still shows black screen, fan running, and it is not loading anything.
I have found that when i start the pc First with 1bg+256mb and then shut down and change to 2X1gb and start again, it works normal. Windows is loading and everything works fine. But when i restart the pc it will not work. The old problem comes back. Black screen, fan running... :?:

Any suggestions ??

Hi again,
what's your video card, how memory it has? Mine, in the same notebook, is Ati xpress 200M and uses 128MB of my RAM (so 896MB remains of mine 512MBx2 ). I think the problen could be with shared video memeory(besause this VGA does'nt have own memory). Maybe you can change smthg in BIOS settings, in mine 1.0F there isn't many options... but it's wort to try, also try change video settings in Windows. Maybe Bios downgrade to 1.0d , 1.0c or 1.0b could help.
Good luck

I am trying to upgrade an Amilo L1310G too, and have read this tread over and over. However, after hours of googeling I still don't understand the criteria of what makes a compatible processor replacement. I do see the poin with socket M and the 479 pin formation of the older socket M processors. I have found Pentium M 760 with what I think is the correct pin positioning, but I see that Luc83 list M 725, 735, 745, 755, 765, all ending with the number 5. Is there a reason for that. What I read from the specifications on Pentium M 760 it is not too different from the 755 and 765. Do any of you know anything about this? Is it worth buying the M 760 and see if works? Any thoughts?

Yes you need the CPU's ending with 5. These have 400 Mhz FSB, the ones ending at 0 have a 533 Mhz FSB and will not work since the motherboard of the L1310g has a 400 Mhz FSB (as far as I can remember).

I've sold my L1310g..was still very happy with it but wanted something new.

My new laptop gets hot and makes noise :( It's a Dell Studio 15 with i7 processor. It's fast but that's the only positive thing really :(

Oh, there is one guy on another forum who says that a M 750 is running fine. So then I think a M 760 would also be ok?
I'm not sure about this...

Thanks for the tip. I have decided to give the old Amilo yet another try. It is handy with an extra workstation. I shall get the new cpu and 2GB ram, it seems they are not as expensive as they used to be. On my first try I managed to by the wrong type. L1310G runs Windows 7 fine, I cannot notice any difference to XP? I have a much slower Dell with Core 2 duo, 4GB and Vista.

Now everything is 64bit, and very fast processors, I wonder if it will make everything else obsolete in a short while?
