Am I the only one that has noticed the serious fan noise? I have seen some post concerning this problem, but was wondering if any of you wonderous wizards would know how to fix this issue. Not something that is fun to deal with when sitting in the university library with everyone hearing my fan :D
any help and the one I have allready recieved is greatly appreciated.

it should be chmod 755 fsca16xx.sh ;)
thx :)

download the script here to your home folder: http://fscamiloa16xx.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/fsca16xx.sh
(you might need to right click the link & select "save as" to download it otherwise it might just display as text)

now type:
chmod755 fsca16xx.sh
sudo ./fsca16xx.sh setup

Also make sure you have the wireless set to start on boot in the bios that way you won't need to keep pressing the button.

Roadrash, many, many thanks from someone who spent a few weeks a year ago trying to get his Li1718 wireless working with Ubuntu, to no avail, and then attempted the same with Puppy a few months ago, again to no avail. Thanks to you referring in this post to the original script (much kudos to the chap who wrote it), I'm now sending this message over a wireless connection from an Li1718 running Intrepid (well the Wubi form of it anyway). Cheers!

Hi
I have just installed Ubuntu 8.10 with kernel 2.6.27-14-generic so many thanks to roadrash hydrurga and everyone else here for their help

This is just an expanded version of earlier post with newbies in mind
First run the updates to the system using synaptics or you could use system - administration - update_ manager
To do this you will need to be wired to you network by cable
then follow the instuctions given by roadrash and hydrurga in their posts.
which are:-

download the script fromhttp://fscamiloa16xx.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/fsca16xx.sh
for which we have to thank Assaf Paz who wrote it
As hydrurga pointed out you want to right click the link and select "save as"
make a mental note of where you are saving the file

then open a terminal
change directory to the where you downloaded the fsca16xx.sh script
type sudo su and enter your password that will make you root (other distributions become root your own way )
type chmod 0755 fsca16xx.sh that will allow you to execute the script
type ./fsca16xx.sh setup
the script will need to get files from the internet so you need to be cabled up to your router or this can't happen
watch the screen because there might be messages you need to read
wait for it to finish then reboot
wireless will be working

To get this fixed for the future there is a bug report open at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hotkey-setup/+bug/250732?comments=all and they need input from us to get things sorted properly so lets give them the help they need

wireless now works natively with the soon to be released Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackolope. I have tested the recent beta on the amilo Li1718 and i was able to get wifi working with the live cd without any intervention. This was a very pleasant surprise.

I wish I could say the same roadrash. I just upgraded my wubi version of Ubuntu to 9.04, rebooted and found that the wireless card isn't now being recognised. I think it's just a case of the wireless button software switch not being turned on but I don't know enough to edit damagedspline's script for 9.04. I'm going to try running it later, editing the script it to treat 9.04 exactly as it did Intrepid Ibex but this really is a stab in the dark.

Further to my post above, I had a go at amending damagedspline's script for Jaunty and, miracle of miracles, my changes appear to work and I now have wireless connectivity under Jaunty (the Wubi-installed version). Not being a programmer, I am not really confident enough to post the amended script as I don't want to risk mucking anyone's systems up, but if anyone wants to play around with it, post a message here and I'll pass it on.

With Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope the script is no longer need as the drivers are now native but if you dont want to keep having to turn it on manually with the button and you want your wireless to turn on automatically during boot all you need to do is this.

1. paste the following into a text file and save it with the name "lanon"

#!/bin/sh
echo 1 > /proc/driver/acerhk/wirelessled

now the easiest thing is to open a terminal and run your file manager such as nautilus as sudo. ie just type sudo nautilis

2. copy this file into the folder /etc/init.d
3. right click on it and select make link
4. now move this link into the folder /etc/rc2.d and rename it to "lanon"

now your wireless should turn on automatically during boot.

Hey

i just installed jaunty, and its recognising my wireless card, but when i press the wireless button, nothing happens. at all.

can anybody help please?

@hydrurga
can you send me your edited script please? and the original one? cheers mate

**EDIT
WOO it works :D all i had to do was update the bios to version 1.9

so if anyone is having trouble, you dont need scripts, just update the bios to the latest version, and jaunty should work straight away :)

Great that you got it to work calumrulez! It's strange that you didn't need the script whereas I did (I'm running BIOS v1.9 as well) but there you go. I usually don't use the wireless button anyway as I set it to be auto hardware switched on in the BIOS.
